Letter to the Printer on Chatham and Bute Negotiations

A correspondent defends against false reports of negotiations between the Earl of Chatham and the Earl of Bute. He recounts inquiries into agents and messages, cites Dr Addington and Sir James Wright, and quotes letters from Lord Chatham’s circle to show disputed facts, aims to publish a clarified account, and defends his father's role while denying direct proposals to join administration.

The Secret Influence Behind Chatham and Bate Meant to Guide Policy

A writer disputes a long standing error about Lord Chatham's hidden influence and the alleged role of Lord Bate in directing measures. He asserts only two people in the kingdom could know the true negation of that view, one of whom is unnamed and the other himself. He claims no royal audience outside Levee or Drawing-Room and denies advising on ministerial offices since 1765. He closes by saying he will not become a newspaper author or engage in printed quarrels.
