Chatham Denies Pursuing Pact With Bute in 1778
A published extract presents Sir James Wright and Dr Addington detailing Lord Chatham's stance on a potential royal administration change. Letters from Addington, Wright, and the Chathams show Chatham opposing any alliance with Bute or North, urging new counsel and firm action to save the kingdom amid political crisis. The document argues Chatham did not seek a pact but urged a genuine shift from past errors to protect the realm.
