Hereford storms and church incidents in old city news
In Hereford last Sunday a fierce storm toppled something from a steeple onto a church roof, frightening worshippers who fled in confusion. A sailor slept in St Martin’s church overnight after evening prayers. A maid was robbed in Tooke’s Court, Holborn, by a knife-wielding woman posing as a lace seller. A Cornhill inn till was broken into, eight pounds taken. The Recorder reported on death-row malefactors with several to be executed next Wednesday and others respited.

Foreign offer for Corfic island and naval shifts in ports
Two and a half million pounds sterling is offered by a foreign court for the island of Corfic if Paoli and his followers consent on their own terms. Since March a large number of men of war and cutters have been kept in commission, with many sailors discharged or drifting. Proposals emerge to establish shore offices along Wapping and Rotherhithe to supply sailors directly, avoiding landlords. Reports from Petersburgh note Empress Catherine promising stone fortifications for water works and promoting trade to develop ports, while Russians store their navy inland due to ice damage. Sturgard reports a review of troops by the Duke of Wirrenberg near Louisburg.
