Rioters in York County Sentenced for Treason
In York on March 28 trials held for rioting across the county. Matthew Bilton, Robert Cole, William Watson, and Richard Ford were found guilty of High Treason for obstructing the Militia Act and received the death penalty. Thirteen others were ordered to remain jailed until the next assizes. Two Weasleydale rioters were convicted of robbing Anthony Batty on the King's Highway and seizing his meal. George Thurloe was convicted of felony for destroying the house of Mr Bowes and sentenced to death.
