Montreal retreat and Burgoyne advance in Carleton letter

In July 1776 London Gazette publishes General Sir Guy Carleton's dispatches describing the Quebec campaign. Rebels crossed from Trois-Rivières with over 2000 men, attacked Three Rivers, then retreated up the river as Brigadiers Nesbitt and Fraser pressed the north shore. British forces pursued via water and land, burning supplies, capturing vessels, and advancing toward St. John’s while Arnold’s column retreated from Montreal. The writer criticizes Carleton's account as hearsay and questions the perceived rebels' bravery, arguing Montreal and St. John’s remain tenuous and warning of Crown Point as a future hurdle.
