Fire in a Malt Kiln Threatens Edinburgh’s City
From Glasgow comes word that early Thursday a fire in a Malt Kiln on Chandleridge Street caused violent flames near the Wester Sugar-House. Thanks to well supplied engines and skilled handling, the sugar-house and nearby buildings were saved, with only the kiln and 13 bolls of malt lost. Extract of Fort William letter, Dec 30, notes more peril from an incident with the Duke d Anville’s squadron. An English ship laden with logwood sugar hides and more was seized. four British sailors sailed for liberty, bound the commander, and four Frenchmen were sent adrift in a long boat. The ship was burned after landing its cargo at Arafaig.
