Attack on Quebec Reflected In Early Feb Letters
A Montreal letter dated Jan 16 reports Montgomery's failed December attack on Quebec between four and six in the morning of the 3rd. It suggests about 500 troops entered the city but faced heavy resistance, with many killed and 66 to 80 officers and privates captured. Arnold briefly seized the Lower Town but was wounded. Maj. Ogden wounded as well. Gen. Wooster and Col. Warner are marching to help, while a British force near 1200 men faced stout defense. Also noted are orders, ship movements, from Boston, Halifax, Plymouth, and London, with news of deserters pardons and various captures and trials.
