Calamitous town fire devastates streets and chapels

A large blaze swept through a town destroying about one hundred and fifty homes and the chapel steeple. Many families fled to fields as flames consumed houses from Clapper-lane to the Angel. Mr Darke the schoolmaster perished in his own home while trying to rescue others. The city council and levee at St James's highlighted distress and loss as bells melted and the town lay in ashes.
