Siege and retreat of French and English fleets on Coromandel coast
Letters from Tranquebar dated June 25 describe a French merchant fleet and two ships trapped by an English squadron under Pocock near Tanjour and Carical during a prolonged engagement off Coromandel. The French loss was heavy, with artillery and breaches, forcing a retreat to Pondicherry. The narrative situates a broader action sequence through Augst, and notes subsequent movements of fleets, naval orders, and public notices across Britain.
