Fire devastates Galata district burning 2500 buildings
From the London Gazette April 13 report, Constantinople March 4, a midnight blaze at Galata consumed 2500 houses and shops near the Tophana area driven by a high northerly wind. Most victims were Greek Armenian and Jewish refugees, many freezing to death despite flames causing few fatalities. Additional fires burned twelve houses and another area damage, with incendiary suspicions. A Belt passage remains icebound delaying packet boats and mails from Hamburgh and England.
