Several ships arrive or depart Mauritius Singapore and Penarth with repairs and surveys ongoing. A new Dutch steamer Japara was launched at Greenock for local Dutch East Indies service.

Anti-Opium Society Holds Westminster Meeting

The Anglo-Oriental Anti-Opium Society met at Canada Buildings Westminster on the 23rd inst with J W Pease in the chair. Attendees included Rev James Legge Sir J Kennaway Mark J Stewart and Henry Richard MP among others. The report showed income £927 10s 4d expenditure £804 3s 1d balance £123 7s 3d. Resolutions adopted re electing officers printing the report and urging Britain to curb opium trade and pursue mutual goodwill with China. The society praised MPs J W Pease Mark Stewart and others for advocacy and urged continued effort.

Hamburg Dispatch Reports Warclouds and Regatta Delights

From Hamburg dated June 20 1875 reports a tense European outlook with war preparations in Europe and heavy activity in Cronstadt shipyards. The Elbe regatta proceeds in fair weather with prizes announced as several boats compete from Schulau lightship to Hamburg. Insurance totals for Hamburg firms reach 1 789 millions marks in 1875 with high premiums. postal rules widen metal transfers to Great Britain via Ostend. Also notes Mohr’s African voyage and various commodity markets and shipping lull.
