Silk Fraud Case Linked to Shinsei gumi in Yokohama

A Japanese silk fraud involving Schoene and Mottu and the Shinsei gumi core emerges. Bales containing old futons and bricks were misrepresented as silk, with arrests of Shinsei gumi leaders in Yokohama. U.S. Navy Paymaster Watkins recaptured after desertion aboard the Ossipee. Arctic captain detained. Prince Louis Napoleon arrives in Yokohama on May 12 for a world tour. Earthquake shocks hit Yokohama on May 8 evening.

Fire destroys houses near Hiogo amid strong wind

Hiogo area saw several western houses burn on May 1 though fire did not spread due to their detached nature. The Osaka Nippo newspaper was suspended on April 24 by order of the Osaka Governor.

Mine Cage Disaster Kills Five Workers in Nagasaki

At the Takajima mine an April 25 accident caused five deaths when five workers stepped into a lowering cage loaded with two coils of steel rope. The cage rope broke and the cage plunged, killing the five instantly.

Missionary distributes books at Peking exam entrance
