The council endorses treaties as imperial law and offers to begin talks with states not yet in treaty relations. Daimio Sakkai-Hidano-Kami advocates broad foreign trade access and urges rapid telegraphic links between Yedo and Miako for swift handling of joint affairs.
Passenger manifest details for the Ellora sailing from Southampton and Marseilles, listing destinations to Shanghai Hong Kong Singapore Calcutta Ceylon Aden Suez and Alexandria with counts of second class travelers and named individuals including Captains, Mrs and children and numerous passengers. Dates shown include June 4 June 12 June 20 June 28 and July 4.
The report from Yokohama notes no newspapers by mail while the Union steamer reached Shanghai on April 10 after departing Yokohama April 8. Nagasaki arrivals include a last barque departing April 14. Shanghai papers yield little Japan news and the Gorogio meeting ends with an unclear result.
From Peking comes a sketch of Spring Races on March 25 with results in several events and notes on spectators. A March 8 review of the Life Guards saw archery, wrestling and sword exercises, but no list of prizewinners yet. Shanghai reports scarce news and a favorable mercantile tilt, plus a Fire Dart case ruling in favor of defendants and the Vanguard’s unusual arrivals to London voyage with a tiny dwarf passenger.
