The P. and O. mail with advices from China and the Straits Settlements arrived via Brindisi one day late. Japan sent no later advices. The next inward mail, despatched from Port Said on the 4th inst, will likely reach London by Saturday next.
Inward and outward passenger movements listed by mail. Names include P. Ormerod, G. Antonicci, A White, V. Passner, Macdonald, Rigg, R. Wilcox, Scott, Ross, Thebaud, Smith, Hives, Dennison, Still, Dale, White, Allyrs, Kemp, Jarvine, Cimier, Spaarwater, Vigelius, Botany, Kloos, Currie, and more. Vessels include Bangalore, Poonah, Amazone, Deccan, Peshawar, Kaisar-i-Hind. Destinations include Brindisi Venice Yokohama Shanghai Singapore Marseilles Hong Kong Ceylon Batavia Tong Kong.
Reports from Tokio and Yokohama note advices by the present mail reaching to April 17. News had been anticipated by earlier cables through San Francisco dated the 28th ult.
H E M s gun vessel Lily from Wenchow via Shanghai arrived on April 11. British ships are scarce here with only occasional Camus visits. Lily likely to stay long. Two French warships Adonis from Shanghai arrived April 10 and Champlain from Yokohama April 12. The flagship Themis and Kersauri are expected. Themis may stay a week or ten days then head to Yokohama.
From May 1880 to end of last year the Ginsan settlement shows 383,130 yen in trade value. Korean exports total 135,827 yen while imports by 209 Japanese settlers amount to 247,250 yen. Foreign goods count at least 234,439 yen. There are 209 settlers, including 46 women.
The Dowager Eastern Empress died suddenly on April 8 at age forty five. The Western Empress, mother of Tung-chi, is long ill, prompting speculation on China’s future. The event may widen cabinet influence and trigger power struggles between Prince Ch'un and Prince Kung backed by Li Hung-chang and Tso Tsung-tang.
