Inward mail up to April 29 expected in London on Monday May 11. Messrs Sillar and Bateman report telegram from Hong Kong dated May 12 announcing tea exports for the fortnight at 1,000,000 pounds. Exchange 4s 7d. Freights range 80s to 90s.
From the Japan Herald dated April 16. Tariff discussions advance in official circles and look favorable to commerce. War possibilities loom if terms to Choshin are rejected. Satsuma reportedly sends 1,000 to 1,200 men. Tycoon’s return to Yedo could be delayed.
A compiled passenger list from Southampton entries on May 20 and June 4 shows travelers bound for Ceylon Singapore Hong Kong Penang Calcutta Madras Aden and Alexandria. Notables include Lt. Col. Phillips and Mr. Graham with various officers families and second class passengers. Additional June sailings include J Collins and M H W Tombs among others.
