Police seize arms under Peace Preservation Ordinance
The first seizure of arms under the Peace Preservation Ordinance was made by police who now hold the weapons. A passenger on the Canton steamer was arrested after showing little cooperation and the arms were taken to Central Station. Forfeiture to the Crown and penalties of up to a $500 fine or imprisonment apply. An Ambulance Society is planned in the colony modeled after Geneva to prepare for a possible Canton bombardment.

Canton Insurance Office Third Ordinary General Meeting

Nine months of progress amid coast losses and court cases
Amid numerous losses on the China coast this year and the Glenelg sinking, the report for the first nine months shows progress. The meeting adopted the accounts, elected Ryrie, Dalrymple, Sassoon, Bottomley and Darby to the Consulting Committee, and reappointed Coxon and MacEwen as auditors. In the Supreme Court Lai Yee Hong v Chung Wah and Chung Fu was decided for $1,122.50 with costs. Receipts for July to September totaled $313,504.63 and expenditures $378,283.14.
