The Venerable John William Sheringham died yesterday in Gloucester at nearly 84. He served as Archdeacon of Gloucester from 1881 to 1902, later succeeded by the current Bishop of Thetford. Ordained by the London bishop, he held a London curacy, then governed Strood in Kent and Standish-with-Hardwicke in Gloucestershire. He became honorary canon of Gloucester Cathedral in 1873 and canon in 1689, and he tirelessly funded restorations of Gloucester Cathedral and Tewkesbury Abbey.
