A tale of two men seeking to divert scrap iron shipments for private use. They query into junkyards while the Red Cross once urged farmers to supply scrap iron for medical work, inviting farmers to decide which applicant deserves the junk.
The Invalided Soldiers' Commission reports 1250 amputation cases as of March 8. Of these, 426 patients have been discharged including 144 above the knee and 14 below, 370 leg amputations above the knee and 180 below among those under treatment or fitted with artificial limbs, and 178 arm amputations above the elbow with 81 below.
A band of gypeice camped along the village route Tuesday afternoon. Females panhandled locals seeking money, and when denied they were abused by the normade. They carried off movable goods and even rainwater before moving on after heavy fog last night.
A reader urges overwhelming support for the Red Cross war effort. The appeal contrasts comforts at home with the front line suffering in France and Flanders and calls on every citizen to give all they can, then more, to aid wounded soldiers and sustain the war.
Captain Gawthrop of the 24th battalion spoke at a Stalwart gathering on Monday evening. He praised Red Cross work at the front, condemned Germany's treatment of the emblem, and commended those behind the society. Keeve Hebron chaired. the program included a reading titled A Night in the Trenches.
Arrangements are under way for a dance at Geo W Pareni's barn four miles out of Liberty on Friday evening June 21. Liberty Bee Deal will provide the music and the Stoxen boys will manage the affair for Mr Purcel. The event proceeds regardless of weather.
H A Cole a Chicago oil man and landowner plans to break up extensive holdings in the Davidson Amazon and Renown districts preparatory to development. Lee Bates appointed manager to oversee work and coordinates with a seven man crew from Chicago arriving to assist. A gasoline outfit will be used to open the operations with Bates based in Chicago and in constant contact with sites.
Miss Wright, Liberty school principal, tendered her resignation to take effect at session end. The board, trustees, and parents regret the decision, praising her as a painstaking, efficient instructor during her eighteen years in charge.
A car driven by two Hokifaste girls overturned between Hokifaste and Penzance last Thursday evening. The vehicle suffered heavy damage but the occupants escaped unharmed though shaken. One girl at the wheel was involved in the mishap near Purcell horn dance site. Norman Beaton conducted business in Regina this week.
