Allied forces push toward Naples as British fleet bombs the harbor region and Italian ports. US Senate hearing looms on British postwar policy while press and oil concerns trigger cross-Atlantic tensions amid North Africa and Naples operations.
Fifteen persons were injured, one seriously, when two coaches of a Chicago and Northwestern train overturned in a ditch near Sanborn Minnesota early Wednesday. The injured were taken to Tracy hospital. several others were hurt but continued on another train.
The Left Hand Corner describes an Allied Forces Mascot Club for service mascots with entries in the Imperial War Museum archives. Dogs dominate but the RAF features tortoise, sheep, and a goat mascot. many pets travel with units and face six months’ quarantine costing owners about £12, with £2 advance. Yugoslav army of liberation clashed with German troops on a broad front including Trieste, claiming to have killed many Nazis. They also reported recapturing Split to avoid encirclement while routing a German column in northern Dalmatia and killing 80 Nazis. In Montenegro and Bosnia, others died as derailed trains helped Austria. Unrest in France grew with attacks on Laval and calls for German control. A Greek relief warning followed.
London reported RAF bombers struck Bochum and other Ruhr valley targets in a heavy raid after a one night lull. Eight bombers failed to return. Canadian squadrons participated. The operation focused on Bochum’s steel and coke works with nearby Krupp facilities. One enemy aircraft was shot down over Holland.
Bethany College in Bethany West Virginia opened a small strip mine on campus. President W H Cramer said more than 500 tons of coal were produced in the first three days marking an unusual campus fuel solution for the coming winter.
The US Navy transport John Penn was torpedoed and sunk off Guadal canal in a Japanese attack. Troops and cargo had just been unloaded from the vessel, with light crew casualties reported as three bombers drew attention before a torpedo plane struck amidships.
Swiss radio reported that between Sept 17 and 27 a total of 21 860 refugees from war torn Europe and 960 escaped prisoners of war arrived in Switzerland. The influx continues at about 200 to 300 daily, the Office of War Information recorded.
Staff Sergeant James Burgess of Lakewood Ohio earned the nickname one man army after single handedly facing about 160 Japanese troops in the New Georgian campaign. He killed an estimated 20 and disrupted a beachhead attack before his machine gun failed and he vanished into the jungle for four days. He returned to base on the fourth day after being listed missing in action.
British war correspondents with the 5th Army killed near Naples after seeing enemy resistance wiped out. Basil Gingell reports the trio died from a German shell amid advancing armored units. Soviet forces shell Kiev suburbs and push toward Vitebsk and Rudnya as the Dnieper crossings unfold.
Allied bombers smashed the Japanese base at Wewak New Guinea destroying a large munitions depot and large fuel stocks. Pilots reported the largest explosions seen in the Southwest Pacific as 145 tons of bombs were dropped. Australian troops pressed fixed defenses near Finschhafen within 600 yards of the main jetty.
Gen Dwight D. Eisenhower and Italian Marshal Pietro Badoglio conferred on military cooperation aboard a warship at Malta. Present were Gen Sir Harold Alexander, Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham, Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Tedder, Harold MacMillan and Robert Murphy. The main aim was to maximize Italy’s military effort against Germany.
The Edmonton Journal reports the National War Labor Board directed union mines in the Edmonton area to raise wages from five dollars a day to five dollars and fifty seven cents. An operator quoted said notice was received Tuesday and the advance will apply to the next pay period.
Walter Holland a 53 year old storeroom keeper was remanded until October 7 on a charge of murdering Olive Casselman a 22 year old truck driver for a Toronto cleaning firm.
An accident on the highway between Lethbridge and Raymond occurred this morning when a truck skidded in loose gravel and overturned in the ditch. The vehicle carried prisoners of war farm laborers from a South Alberta camp and two men were reported hurt. Further details were unavailable.
