Soviet sources report a defence decree broadening compulsory military training to build the largest reserve army in history. The program, ordered by Stalin's defence committee, aims to flood the front with trained reserves to hasten final victory over Nazi forces.
RAF daylight raids resumed on the German coast of northern France with night attacks into Germany including Karlsruhe and Rhine land targets. Fighter escorts reported dogfights near the shore as St Nazaire and other sites were bombed. 11 German planes were claimed destroyed at a cost of 10 RAF planes.
Prime Minister Mackenzie King, returning from Britain, urged the free world to act as one to spare humanity prolonged agony. In a national broadcast at a Canadian Club dinner, he warned that any Europe under Axis conquest endangers the Americas and cited Roosevelt’s Atlantic action to illustrate the rising danger.

Labor Minister McLarty said 4000 striking workers at McKinnon Industries in St Catharines cannot receive wages beyond wartime policy limits. He told international representative Robert Stacey that the walkout harms Canada's war effort and national interest. Stacey had asked for a formula and to meet in Ottawa. The minister noted an earlier invitation to Stacey and the union to discuss in Ottawa was rejected.
Alberta Cancer Commission closing session in Taber hears W E Bullock allege neglect by Health Minister Dr Cross for not visiting Taber to inspect Koch cancer remedy cases. Bullock notes Dr McGugan visited patients but says time constraints limited initial interviews and that political figures pressed for fuller case histories and notification.
President Roosevelt asked Congress for an additional 5.985 billion dollars to finance the lend lease program. The plan would raise total lend lease funds to 12.985 billion. The proposal, forwarded to Speaker Rayburn, details allocations for agricultural and industrial goods, ordnance, and aviation materiel.
London editors in The Times and News Chronicle urged Britain to consider military moves to ease pressure on Russia. The Times warned against waiting and called for seizing the opportunity to aid the eastern front and strike other fronts. The News Chronicle questioned delaying invasion, arguing further German breakthroughs would leave Britain with idle forces.
United States maritime officials said three Alcoa line freighters would be requisitioned by order of the U S Maritime Commission after the Seafarers International Union rejected a commission ultimatum to arbitrate the dispute over war bonus demands. The three ships join 11 already tied up by the strike.
Thousands awoke as a sharp quake struck at 11 32 pm Pacific time with tremors felt from San Francisco to Santa Cruz. The quake lasted over a minute, most strong in the Marina and Richmond districts, but there were no reported damages.

Alberta schools will reopen Monday after a three week delay caused by infantile paralysis and sleeping sickness outbreaks. The province wide ban on assemblies for under 18s will be lifted at midnight Sunday enabling children under 16 to attend theatres and other public places starting next week.
Treasury Secretary Morgenthau disclosed U S financial aid to Russia began a month earlier with a 10 million dollar treasury advance. He noted a RCFC subsidiary was buying 100 million dollars of minerals from Russia and paying part of it in advance to supply cash for war purchases in the United States.
An authoritative source in London declares Britain and the United States must quickly supply a Niagara of war materiel to Russia to cover Soviet losses and avert a disaster for the Allies in the greatest battle in history. The battle now sways and Hitler may launch a separate peace offensive. If Russia lacks equipment they might be forced to surrender. The war’s outcome, he says, could determine world history.
