British and Russian troops reportedly marching toward Tehran as shah abdicates under pressure. The 1925-ascended monarch fled the capital amid plans to occupy Tehran with minimal Iranian resistance. Crown prince Shahpour Mohammed Reza expected to succeed.
German authorities order confiscation of all property within the German-occupied Netherlands belonging to the House of Orange and Nassau led by Queen Wilhelmina. The queen and family hold palaces in The Hague Het Loo Apeldoorn Dam Palace Amsterdam and a Soestdyk palace for Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard with additional farms and properties. The Left Hand Corner reports new French escapees to England aiding General de Gaulle. A 19 year old girl fled via a goods train into a forbidden zone, hid from German soldiers, crossed the demarcation line to free France, and reached Toulouse where she was jailed for vagrancy and then placed as a kitchen maid in a convent.
Cairo, Sept. 16. Axis planes bombed the city heavily, killing 39 civilians and wounding 93. The raid followed warnings that bombing Cairo or Athens would bring reprisals against Rome. The British government had warned the Axis the bombing of Rome would continue to the war’s end. German officials claimed they did not intend to bomb Athens or Cairo.
Domei reports from Nanking the Burma road blocked at over 200 locations by landslides in southwest Yunnan. The road major supply route for the Chungking government would be shut for some time despite reconstruction efforts.
The U S Atlantic Fleet begins a new phase of operations at 12:01 am to protect cargo ships along a 2000 mile North Atlantic stretch. Navy units are ordered to capture or destroy Axis raiders as they appear while Britain’s shipping relief comes from armed American merchantmen sailing to British empire ports. The Attorney General ruling allows war matériel to be carried to multiple British colonies except the United Kingdom, clearing the way for munition transport.
Sept 16 report says the Cramer Chair factory, under a U S government contract to build airplane seats, was damaged by a blast that arson squad suspects was caused by a black powder bomb. No injuries and no motive found.
Berlin reports German high command says air supported attacks created bridge heads across the lower Dnieper and the army pushed eastward on a broad front. It claims defeating three Soviet armies near Leningrad and annihilating nine divisions with heavy losses. German figures include 320 tanks and 695 artillery pieces captured or destroyed.
In Edmonton on September 16 a joint committee began sessions to explore refunding Alberta's public debt of 147 million dollars. Bondholders and provincial government appointees held separate preliminary meetings while Courtland Elliott of A. B. Ames & Co. said the group is glad to examine the situation with the treasury board.
The Italian high command reports German mechanized forces moved into Egyptian territory east of Salum, forcing British troops to retreat. It says German and Italian fighters shot down 12 enemy planes, with ten Italian aircraft returning unflyable and several crew wounded. Our planes also hit an enemy merchant ship in the eastern Mediterranean, though British confirmation is lacking.
Washington reports that all vessels authorized by law have been contracted for and the United States Navy now has 17 battleships in actual service. Two new 35,000 ton battleships, the North Carolina and the Washington, joined the fleet this month, with 4 more on the way, as part of an $7.2 billion shipbuilding program begun January 1940.
Ottawa reported the Royal Canadian Navy announced Able Seaman Archibald N. M. Menzies of Victoria died August 15 from cerebral concussion. His death raises navy casualties since the war began to 373.
W E Bullock testifies before the Alberta Cancer Commission sitting in Taber regarding the Koch treatment for cancer. He cites his wife’s healing by a Montana doctor and says his reward is helping others, seeking government adoption for provincial access. Presiding is Dr W A R Kerr with Dr J F Fyfe and J S Cor KOCH TREATMENT.
Moscow reports a night battle near Leningrad ended in a rout of German forces with heavy Soviet tank action. Red Star says Soviets destroyed 25 heavy tanks, three armored cars, and nine field guns, while commu niques claim sinking 19 German vessels including seven troop transports and three escort ships in Barents and Baltic waters.
Wing Commander W A Jones will command the new gunnery and bombing school at Lethbridge Alberta as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Jones, a Royal Canadian Air Force permanent officer, has chaired Mosbank gunnery instruction and arrived in Lethbridge to take residence in Henderson Apartments.
A large force of British bombers attacked Hamburg last night, striking air shipyards, factories and railways. The raid also hit Cuxhaven, Bremen and Wilhelmshaven, with docks at Le Havre in occupied France targeted. the operation lasted hours and caused many major fires.
News bulletins report Bulgaria's reply to Moscow's warning that recent measures were defensive and precautionary. Russia objected to Axis troop and naval preparations on Bulgarian soil and ports. The note frames Bulgarian moves as defensive.
