Ottawa September 14 A Progressive Conservative MP J M Macdonnell Muskoka Ontario delivered his maiden speech urging government honesty in reconstruction and a lead for the people. He urged removal of controls tax relief with balance, and a clear score on sacrifices, drawing strong applause from both sides as the throne speech debate continued.

Canadian prisoners in Niigata Japan endured brutal conditions from 1943 to liberation. Hunger and disease killed 89 of the 250 inmates amid cold winters and snowbound isolation. Vancouver today faced a three alarm blaze that destroyed the Pioneer Envelope Company plant in False Creek. Captain EF W Barnett, 60, of the Vancouver fire department, died.
