Allied forces press the Salerno Salerno bridgehead as German resistance stiffens. The 8th Army advances from Sicily toward Naples, capturing Crotone port and pushing into the Adriatic frontier at Bari and Taranto, while German air power and forces contest the southern front.
Nazi broadcasts hailed Mussolini’s rescue as a bold coup after German parachute troops released the former premier. Reports claimed other fascist leaders may have been freed, while Allied and neutral sources offered cautious, conflicting interpretations of Mussolini’s future role in a Nazi-ruled northern Italy.
A London cable describes the Stanford Bishop Church relic chair once used by the first Archbishop of Canterbury in 313 A.D. It was nearly chopped for firewood by masons during repairs about 100 years ago, saved by a stoic sexton, later gifted to Canterbury, and now returned to Stanford Bishop Church while ownership remains with Canterbury. In Valetta Malta forces include Giulio Cesare and Giuseppe Miraglia joining 38 Italian warships now in Allied hands after surrender. Italian fleet units arrived Friday and Saturday, with five of seven battleships already in Allied control. Roma sunk by German planes and Impero still unreported.
New York dispatch says 18 American bombers attacked Japanese installations in the northern Kurile Islands yesterday. Domei reports two transports burned and significant land defenses damaged while claiming heavy Japanese losses.
London reports Britain will shift heavy ships to the Far Eastern fleet under Admiral Somerville for a major Allied offensive this fall. Mountbatten’s Burma campaign gains may include thousands of commandos. aims include recapturing the Burma road and striking outlying Japanese bases in the Andamans and Nicobars as monsoon season ends in October.
Reports from the front say German troops are well entrenched on higher ground as fighting remains grim. The fate of Mussolini King Victor Emmanuel and Pietro Badoglio is unclear while German broadcasts claim Mussolini was rescued by parachutists. Allied bullets report the British and Canadian 8th Army pushing along the Calabrian toe with little enemy resistance despite demolitions delaying progress.
Allied forces captured Salamaua airdrome in northeastern New Guinea after Australian troops swam the Francisco River to surprise the enemy. The advance aimed toward Lae, with pincers closing from northwest and northeast as part of a 10 week operation begun June 30 at Nassau Bay. Australians repelled Japanese counterattacks on the Lae eastern flank.
Allied North Africa dispatch reports Italy agrees to surrender Corsica and hand over all United Nations prisoners. The armistice signed by Eisenhower and Badoglio on Sept 3, announced Sept 8, outlines ceasefire, denial of German facilities, immediate transfer of forces and internees, and requisition of Italian merchant shipping for Allied military needs.
Chiang Kai-Shek was elected president of China to succeed the late Lin Sen by the Kuomintang central executive committee. He becomes commander-in-chief of land, air, and naval forces, with the party pledging political reform and dissolution of the Soviet structure after the war. The committee confirmed him as premier and kept heads of four other councils in office.
Allied fliers reported success over Burma with hurricane fighters attacking Japanese troops on the Sinoh peninsula, while Beau fighters damaged locomotives and trucks and set fire to army vehicles along the Ramree Island and Kaladan River routes. More than 150 Japanese were killed in a dive bombing of enemy-occupied buildings at Buthedaung on August 31.
Defence Minister Ralston announced a 20 000 man cut in Canada's home defence force. The move disbands the 4th and 5th Divisions and partially disbands the 6th, amid a smaller army and improved strategic outlook. About 250,000 in three equal groups: 80,000 in operational units, 80,000 in training, 80,000 in home war establishments.
Windsor Ontario report says five men Franklin FP Smith 29 Peter Devin 28 Leo Dukcey 28 Allan Baldew in Windsor and Vern Gates of Sandwich face armed robbery charges over the $34,000 attack on the Royal Bank of Canada branch at Wheatley. Inspector George Mackay of the Ontario Provincial Police announced charges to be laid in county police court.
London dispatch reports Soviet heavy artillery menacing Bryansk as Red Army drives to within 12 miles from the east. In a four mile advance the Russians took Belye Berega and 40 villages amid bitter fighting, continuing a summer offensive aimed at pressing Germans toward the Dnieper and beyond.
Russian forces sever the Brvansk Vyagma railroad at Bitosh, 40 miles north of Bryansk, isolating the northern area and forcing retreat routes toward Roslavl and Gomel. Roslavl, 80 miles northwest, faces military pressure as operations aim to trap German forces along the central front.
The Red army reaches the edge of Bryansk axis bastion amid front advances south to the Sea of Azov. Soviet forces occupy two Bryansk rail junctions though not the town.
