Hamburg dispatch reports the Runymede Park, the final British transport docking with Exodus 1947 refugees, completed disembarkation at 2 35 p m local after British troops used water hoses to break a sit down strike. Fighting occurred aboard the ship with 33 injured according to an official casualty report.
British officials said one Jew escaped during the night from Poppendorf camp where Exodus 1947 refugees were screened after disembarkation at Hamburg. Reports described injuries to Jews including 12 women, with at least six men showing head wounds as troops worked to process detainees amid chaotic scenes.
London correspondent notes Gurkha battalions split between Hindustan and Pakistan with temporary status. Eight battalions to remain under British control with British officers. Gurkhas famed for morale and kukri skills, trusted in jungle combat. Continued on back page.
No Homburg Anthony Eden former British foreign secretary and deputy leader of the Conservative opposition in the House of Commons is shown after a flight in his honorary capacity of air commodore. He led a squadron in formation across Kent the first such honorary flight since the war with him as leader of his own squadron.
In the United States prices for staples climbed with only margarine falling five cents in New York. The AP index of 35 wholesale commodities hit a record 192.26 as meat coffee butter eggs and corn rose. Butter and eggs prices surged while pork could rise further. grain futures showed rare highs. Senator Kilgore warned of renewed price controls unless profits are curbed.
In Guanabara Bay a launch carrying 105 Independence Day revelers, many women and children, collided with a ferry. At least 26 Brazilians died and 70 were hurt, after viewing a parade reviewed by President Truman and Brazilian President Dutra.
Rain fell across the drought plagued British zone in Germany ending a long dry spell. The German weather bureau reports most readings were light but some locations recorded nearly an inch of precipitation.
A nation-wide tie-up of the Canadian meat packing industry looms after failed contract talks between the United Packinghouse Workers of America and Canada Packers Limited and Burns and Company. The union seeks about 17 2 cents an hour for 16 000 employees, with 3 500 workers already on strike at six Swift Canadian plants. If granted, base pay would rise to 92 cents an hour. Canada Packers operates plants in Charlottetown Montreal Hull Toronto Peterborough and other Ontario locations.
About 400 workers at Canada Packers Limited Edmonton plant voted to strike over wage demands. A Burns packing plant vote was under way. Nearly 500 Swift Canadian Edmonton workers have been on strike since August 27 after failed talks on a new labor agreement.
In a joint statement, Winnipeg Edmonton and Vancouver plants of Burns and Company, with Canada Packers, say workers in the meat packing industry have gained at least a twenty percent living standard rise since 1939. They argue current conditions do not justify the wage increase urged by the union and note a proposal to submit the issues to conciliation under independent auspices before any strike.
Montreal Mayor Camillien Houde searches for his council gavel during a National Boxing Association convention visit. Delegates presented miniature gloves at city hall, and the missing gavel becomes a noted oddity as officials joke about its use.
Most Rev. George F. Kingston, Archbishop of Nova Scotia, is chosen as the seventh primate of the Church of England in Canada. The 58 year old Prescott Ontario native succeeds Archbishop Derwyn T. Owen and becomes the first native-born Canadian primate in the country. Balloting by a 100 member electoral college preceded the installation at the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist in Saskatoon. The ceremony featured archbishops, bishops, and choirs from Saskatoon churches.
London police hunt for a killer after three shots echoed from a second floor flat in Shaftesbury avenue. Rita Green or Rita Driver, a 30 to 35 year old Soho showgirl, died at Rupert street hospital. A 35 to 40 year old man in a blue suit with a dispatch case is sought. Rita had married three months earlier to a West End jeweler.
A government study shows Western Europe nearing 50 percent of 1938 trade levels in 1946 exports while Eastern Europe lags at about 40 percent. Russia’s bloc posts higher trade in some sectors but remains heavily indebted, with Finland and others far below prewar activity. Portugal leads gains, buying fast yet selling little, as Spain profits from export activity. The report notes four Pars participants—Teeland, Eire, Luxembourg, Turkey—were omitted, while Spain is included.
Reports from New Delhi describe renewed gunfire and widespread clashes in Old and New Delhi as Hindus Sikhs and Muslims fight amid rioting. Hundreds of bodies have been reported and mass evacuations are under way as authorities deploy troops to restore order.

Winnipeg reports a simple graveside service planned for the 22 unknown victims of a Labor Day head on crash between two Canadian National trains near Dugald. The 22 will be driven in a cortege from Manitoba's legislative grounds to a roadside cemetery with officials and relatives in attendance, the public barred from the burial.

In New York three men captured a gold refiner in his financial district office and fled with gold and platinum valued at $50 000 plus $1 000 cash. A bomb was found on the refugee ship Empire Rival at Hamburg and exploded safely. World fliers completed another leg near Cairo. George W Truman and Gifford W Evans covered nearly 1 300 miles from Rome in light planes. The U S embassy in Paris was asked for a report on Rabbi Baruch Korff’s alleged London pamphlet bombing plans. Mrs Jeanne Eder Schwyer of Switzerland was elected president of the International Council of Women in Philadelphia. Canada Packers and Burns and Company were urged to appoint a conciliator in a wage dispute. A Baroness Genevieve de Belabre’s Montreal apartment reported jewelry theft worth $5 800.
