Liner Manhattan Burns At Sea 1600 Rescued
The Wakefield, formerly the Manhattan, was badly damaged by fire on Sept 2 while at sea. More than 3600 passengers and crew were removed with no loss of life, several injured. The ship was salvaged and towed to an Atlantic coast port. The fire origin is undetermined and the vessel carried 600 to 700 crew and officers under Cmdr Harold Gardner Bradbury of Port Angeles.
