United Nations troops halted fresh Communist assaults north of Taegu. Western forces faced a major strike near the central base city as North Korea used 84 tanks in battle, with Allied air forces destroying 19 enemy tanks and damaging 22 others in a record 625 sorties. Seventeen more tanks were knocked out Wednesday.
President Truman made an unheralded visit to the Marine Corps League and urged there be no further misunderstandings with the marines. He noted his yesterday apology for earlier remarks calling Marines a police force with a propaganda machine. An American tourist from Forest Grove Oregon died when the panel truck they drove overturned on a highway curve three miles north of Kingsgate Cranbrook. His companion was injured but not seriously enough for hospitalization. Identification was not yet made by RCMP. Kingsgate lies about 40 miles from Cranbrook.

Washington reports President Truman has chosen W Stuart Symington to lead the home front command with supervisory powers over upcoming credit controls priorities and allocations. Symington currently heads the National Security Resources Board and will oversee a series of controls and distributions to be announced soon.
New York September reports Tallulah Bankhead received a substantial settlement in her defamation and damages suit against NBC CBS Proctor and Gamble Soap Company and Benton Bowles Advertising Agency over a singing shampoo commercial using her name The actress had sought up to one million dollars and claimed the ad breached rights by featuring her as a product spokesman and discontinuing use of her name

Tokyo reports a captured North Korean lieutenant described a plan to seize Taegu via the Waegwan and Kunwi corridors. The 15th Division moved west then east toward Taegu, while two large convoys moved south with artillery and supplies. The plan changed due to strong American resistance and Yongchon’s defense.
Ottawa reports a new air force field will be activated in Alberta soon to handle air crew training for British and Canadian pilots as defense ministers push stronger coast defenses.
