Prime Minister Mackenzie King urged that a US pledge to back Britain, extending the 3 year Canada guarantee, could shorten the war. He framed US involvement as vital to resist Nazism and keep Britain as the western hemisphere bridgehead, warning isolationists aid prolongs suffering.
Soviet claims describe day and night combat between Novgorod and Lenigrad as German units reinforce, but Moscow reports heavy losses for the invaders. Kiev also sees fierce battles near the capital of Ukraine with large Soviet counterattacks and several German regiments said destroyed.
The Ottawa Journal reports efforts to preserve the Hanoverian cream breed once favored by royalty. King George V ended the stable, horses now work or are sent to Whipsnade. Fraulein receives justice after a bombed Old Bailey case as an English jury accepts her word against her former mistress.
Prime Minister Churchill described Canada as the linchpin of the English speaking world and said Canada’s unity with the United States and Britain ties together the free branches of humanity. He spoke at a lord mayor’s luncheon honoring Prime Minister Mackenzie King, amid bomb damage at Mansion House. King pledged Canada’s stay beside Britain to the end.
Simla, India. British and Indian forces have established interior positions in Iran to disrupt Axis designs. The latest statement reports advances of 400 miles in western Iran over mountains and nearly 200 miles in the southwest across sandy wastes and rocky terrain, with control of key oil zones and mail roads from Iran to the Caucasus.
A British source values German losses at about 1,750,000 and Russian losses between 2,000,000 and 3,000,000 in the conflict. It lauds Russian conduct as magnificent and notes their scorched earth policy, including blowing up the Lenin Dnieper River dam.
Mediterranean air arm attacks five merchant ships escorted by seven destroyers off Sardinia. One large ship blew up after a torpedo hit amidships, another large ship hit, two smaller vessels damaged. Attack caused complete surprise and disorder. East of Cape Spartivento near southern Sardinia.
Berlin reports operations on the eastern front continue successfully as Germany’s news agency DNB says Russian landings from the Black Sea were crushed two days earlier. Five boatloads of Russians supposedly tried to land Tuesday, while another crossing attempt at the lower Dnieper was repelled and German artillery pressed Red Army forces on the eastern shore.
The Vichy government appropriated 128000000 francs for Dakar naval base work and overland Mediterranean communications. Plans include port installations and expanding the Dakar Niger railway and completing a Trans Saharan highway to reduce reliance on Atlantic naval control.
British air forces bombed Brest in Nazoccupied France after Berlin raids. RAF heavy bombers struck industrial targets, causing fires and blast damage, as radio reports note renewed German disruptions and few Nazi fighters over Britain. The Berlin campaign, described as severe, presages harsher raids as winter nears.
Vancouver reports that Hon J L Isley minister of finance says agreements between Dominion and provinces may allow the Dominion to take over personal income and corporation tax fields for the war period. He hopes to conclude by late September though it may not be possible. Isley arrived from Edmonton for talks with the province's war savings committees.
In London Brendan Bracken invites US lawmakers to visit Britain to study lease lead materials and act as independent observers. Senators and representatives respond skeptically, noting lease lend spending is an executive function and expressing reluctance to travel.
President Roosevelt authorized lend license aid to Poland's exiled government allowing military equipment to reach Polish troops training in Canada. The White House said guns, rifles, artillery, trucks and other supplies will be sent to these troops, underscoring US policy to aid all resisting aggression.
News wires report eleven German fighter planes were downed during British operations today with seven British fighters missing. Other items note large auxiliary service appeal for 17 to 20 million dollars, the Duke of Kent's farewell CBC broadcast, and various war-related events including raids on Berlin and Malta as well as a British cruiser sinking an Italian submarine.
