Berlin reports four German military governors meet to end the currency split and assess technical issues in the Berlin crisis. Four power experts discuss transport, finance, and economics while Western and Soviet roles in a unified currency remain contested.
Construction of the Welling to Magrath highway will start immediately with two to five outfits. The stretch from Lethbridge to Welling and Magrath to Cardston is finished. Work also proceeds from Cardston to Waterton Lakes National Park. The grade should be gravelled this fall and the full hard surface completion date is not announced.
Moscow reports the death of Andrei Zhdanov 52 a leading Kremlin rival to succeed Stalin He was secretary of the Communist party central committee and a key figure in the Cominform attack on Tito His funeral is set for Thursday in Moscow with body in state at the Hall of Columns in the House of Trade Unions Zhdanov helped shape policy from Leningrad and rose to top party posts shaping wartime defense and postwar campaigns He led the Cominform creation and the 1943 order dissolving Comintern continues on page two.
Hollywood musician David Rose completed a two year, ten thousand dollar project to run a full scale model passenger train on his suburban estate. He installed a locomotive, seven flat cars, a caboose, 35 tons of track and a signaling system. Rose described the build as a life dream, despite prior financial strains and a career built around music.
Ottawa dispatch reports new union criticism as the federal labor code becomes law by proclamation. Fat Conroy of the Canadian Congress of Labor calls the measure "unnecessarily restricted" and says it lacks national scope for disputes in key industries. He criticizes absence of union security and dues check-off, court enforcement versus a labor relations board, inadequate penalties, possible costly legal actions, and board power to revoke certification. warns it could enable delays and fails to outlaw company unions.
Vancouver mayor Charles Jones aged 68 died in hospital after months of illness. He became acting mayor after G G McGeer’s death, was elected chief magistrate in fall elections, and took office January 3, 1948. Jones had long civic service, started as city treasurer, became city clerk in 1931, alderman in 1940, and chaired the Vancouver Athletic Commission from 1926 to 1947. He is survived by his widow. funeral arrangements to be announced.
Ottawa announced Halifax KC Charles J. Burchell was named Canadian high commissioner to Newfoundland as its union with Canada proceeds. Burchell, who previously served as Canada’s high commissioner in Newfoundland, Australia and South Africa, returns after private practice in Halifax since 1945.
Henry A Wallace, running mate Glen Taylor faced mob and segregation barriers as southern states barred him from speaking on public steps. Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas vowed escorts. Alabama officials warned of strict segregation enforcement. Taylor had been jailed in Birmingham May 1 on disorderly conduct charges.
Empress Alberta Sept 1 A prairie fire started by lightning engulfed more than 100000 acres of grassland at the north end of the British Block near Empress and south of town. Firefighters aided by soldiers from the Suffield Experimental Station and district farmers battled through the night. Airborne observers helped direct firefighting efforts as crews capped the last front about 30 miles west of Empress.
A Royal Canadian Air Force Vampire aircraft set an unofficial speed record for the Vancouver to Calgary run. Flight Lieutenant Mel Lee of Vancouver piloted the jet, landing in Calgary four minutes and 43 seconds after takeoff. The 442 mile line normally takes passenger aircraft about three hours, while the jet clocked 488 miles per hour as officials deferred final acceptance.
The railroads prepared to embargo freight bound for west coast ports if a maritime work stoppage occurs tomorrow. Gass of the AAR said the measure guards against cars being tied up. embargo to be lifted if stoppage fails. Negotiators in San Francisco raced to avert a Pacific coast port tie-up by midnight. unions agreed to all-or-none signing. A new strike threat emerged from the Marine Radio Officers Union amid a jurisdictional fight with CIO. In New York, a trucking tie-up loomed as Teamsters Local 807 said drivers would not work without a contract, involving about 12,000 drivers and helpers.
EDMONTON Sept 1-7 Unofficial reports say oil has been discovered in the Redwater district about 27 miles north of Edmonton with crude oil flowing from a wildcat well drilled by Imperial Oil. Imperial Oil officials later confirmed the strike and called the show of oil encouraging pending deeper drilling or production testing. Calgary Sept 1 Charles William Leask of Keyes Mun died in hospital after a fall from the fifth floor of a hotel Tuesday morning.
Paris reports Premier Robert Schuman begins a new cabinet with support of 322 to 185 in the national assembly, the weakest initial backing yet. He opposes wage hikes, favors bread and milk price rises, and seeks tax boosts to cover a 26.6 million dollar budget gap, backed by the Mouvement Republain Populaire and allies.
BURMIS Alta Sept 1 A fire of unknown origin razed five buildings at the Carbondale camp of the Burmis Lumber Co 23 miles west of here Tuesday afternoon. Damage was estimated at 8000 by a Burmis lumber official. One garage a disk storage shop and four sheds used for logging were destroyed. bunk houses and the cook house escaped.
Prague reports former President Eduard Benes, 65, in unconsciousness after a stroke and doctors foresee no recovery. Benes, co founder of Czechoslovakia, has faced long illness intensified by recent political turmoil, with his resignation in June amid communist consolidation under Klement Gottwald.
Montreal dispatch reports Pat Sullivan, former president of the Canadian Lake Seamen's Union, retired as the CLSU merges into the Seafarers International Union of North America. The SIU gains Canadian district control. Sullivan's removal was a precondition for talks. The merger aims to resolve lake strike tensions as the Seafarers Union is described as anti Communist and stronger than the CLSU.
Stuttgart reports that Hjalmar Schacht former Reichsbank president and Nazi economic official is acquitted of major war crimes charges and ordered released from internment. The court found his opposition activity from 1936 outweighed earlier support for Hitler. American officials expressed disbelief at the verdict and Schacht planned to visit the Tyrol with family.
