Charles A Magrath first mayor of Lethbridge in 1891 died Sunday in Victoria at age 89. A Dominion land surveyor who helped shape the town, he was credited as the father of irrigation in South Alberta. His public service spanned president of the Lethbridge Board of Trade, MP for Medicine Hat, and roles on national commissions and hydro projects. He was born near Ottawa in 1860. Edmonton Hero Rescues Neighbor From Burning Home
James Swanbeck of Edmonton saved Mrs. G. F. Haswell by carrying her out of a burning residence on Saturday. Overcome by smoke and with inflamed eyes, he was treated at a hospital in an oxygen tent for his heart condition. Mrs. Haswell survived with no hospital care needed. Fire crews stopped the blaze after damaging the dwelling, which suffered extensive damage.
