President Roosevelt told a Navy League dinner that the shooting has started and America has been attacked. He said Americans have cleared decks and taken battle stations and urged broadening the neutrality act to arm merchant ships and allow carrying American goods to friends’ harbors.

New York reports Marine circles say the 6996 ton tanker British Mariner suffered a direct torpedo strike on its engine room and was probably sunk during an October 20 convoy attack 250 miles west of Monrovia Liberia. The vessel, built in 1922, had carried American oil to Britain.

London Oct 28 The Canadian Press reports rumors that Lord Beaverbrook may resign from his post as minister of supply due to health. Insiders say the asthma illness could affect his ability to stay in the war cabinet, though sources emphasize it would not end his political career.
London reports its third straight month with no air raid warning. In four months the city had only one alert and three since the June 22 invasion of the Soviet Union. The last general alarm occurred July 27 28. Sirens sounded 152 times this year totaling 295 hours. since the war began Londoners have faced 1,477 hours under warning.
London reports Hess has been sent to Fort Henry Kingston Ont claims from U S sources. Ottawa war officials said no information on Hess whereabouts. Officials in internment operations mocked the latest Hess story calling it same old question and answer.
Gordon Maxwell, 18, of Claresholm died near Bowell eight miles west of Medicine Hat when a three ton trash truck left the grade and overturned. Driver Jerome W. Butts and passenger Allan G. Barclay survived. An inquest is set for Medicine Hat. Maxwell and Barclay were heading to Suffield for work at the British block. Maxwell’s body was found near the truck after the roller in the back of the truck apparently struck him.
Edmonton city council urged the federal transport department to inaugurate air service linking Regina and Edmonton via Saskatoon. In Calgary a laundry fire caused smoke inhalation injuries to Wong Suey and minor burns to another person.
Berlin reports German high command says troops entered Kramatorsk, a major Soviet tank factory city near Kharkov, as Leningrad bombardments continue to soften defenses. A commentator notes 39,000 of 100,000 residents worked at the Stalin plant. Weather and Donets fighting support ongoing front operations.
A White House luncheon honored the Duke and Duchess of Windsor with a dozen guests present. Mrs. Roosevelt, traveling hostess in Chicago, sent regrets and departed to the airport with the duchess while Mrs Morgenthau and others mingled. The Windsors later joined officials for a brief chat before departure.

MILK RIVER Oct 28 Joe Wachtler a prominent farmer in Milk River district was accidentally shot while coyotes hunting with his two sons. He died in a Lethbridge hospital. He leaves a widow and ten children. Funeral at St Peters Milk River Thursday morning.
Prime Minister John Curtin said Australia would give all help to Russia and that government and London talks were continuous. Australia and Britain plan appointing six delegates to the Empire Parliamentary association mission to serve three months, aiding England the United States and Canada.
The Chinese Central News Agency reports from Foochow that Chinese forces seized two additional islands at the Min river mouth over the weekend as Japanese defenders fled to warships. In other world news President Roosevelt weighs general strike legislation for defence industries in the United States. Vatican City says it is buying supplies in the United States for its 700 residents. Hitler suspends executions of hostages at Nantes and Bordeaux. The King and Queen host luncheon with Churchill at No 10 Downing Street. Hitler receives two Turkish generals at his eastern front. A German convoy off the Dutch coast is attacked by RAF Hudsons. Regina reports a new training centre will train Alberta and Saskatchewan troops. Mackinnon returns from a South American trade mission. Royal Air Force destroys an Italian freight train near Cotrone. French Somaliland claims defeat of Allied forces in the region.
