Berlin report says the Soviet Union rejected Western protests accusing Soviet planes of violating air safety as they harassed Allied cargo flights to Berlin. ADN quotes Moscow denying any four power agreement and denying the charges as invalid.
Ottawa reports 275,956 orders for 57,176,900 in Canada Savings Bonds payroll plan. Compared to 246,911 orders for 44,319,500 last year, average purchase spots at 207.20 versus 195.70. Officials say totals may exceed last year’s 109 million after canvasses.
London correspondent reports Princess Elizabeth favors Birkhall as a permanent Scottish home. The house, small but cosy with gardens, is near Balmoral and has strong family associations from summers with parents and sister. The King owns the property and may set it aside for Elizabeth after the current Scottish season.
Prime Minister Mackenzie King rested well and rose early in Toronto after a blood circulation ailment. Don Senanayake of Ceylon visited him as Commonwealth leaders gathered for the conference. He plans to entertain visitors today and return home at week’s end.

The Union plans war production, improves African communications, and aims to cooperate with Britain and British colonies in a wider African security framework. A political blur remains as Britains empire system keeps SA integrated whether in or out.
Paris reports French Communist leaders at Lille threaten a nationwide sit-down strike in support of strikebound coal miners. Government troops and police hold the northern coal fields with 30 000 troops deployed. A striker was killed in clashes and nearly 500 protesters were arrested amid claims Communists followed Cominform orders.
Louise Brown a 16 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Brown of Didsbury Alberta is to leave Sick Children's hospital Toronto after a successful operation to remove coal from her lungs. The baby is described as quite satisfactory and may go home soon. Louise arrived by plane October 15 but measles delayed the procedure. Coal likely swallowed over a month ago. The Canadian Legion and Red Cross funded the trip.
William Pohl identified a decomposed body found in a bush pasture near Kitchener as his wife Emma Pohl missing since September 13. An inquest is planned in Woodstock. The coroner noted strangulation and described the body as nearly nude with a black dress pulled up and a white slip knotted about the throat.
Calgary Power Ltd. unveils a five year program to spend 16 million dollars on new hydro plants and transmission. The Spray Lakes project aims for 111000 kilowatts with Canmore and Bearspaw sites near Calgary. Additional sites are lined up for future demand.
The five power Western European union plans a North Atlantic defensive pact with the United States and Canada. Drafts of a treaty are complete and a final version may reach the U S Senate within three months. Officials say mutual military aid is being prepared and ambassadors will formally request the treaty in Washington and Ottawa after the U S election.
London priests of Southwark Cathedral criticize David Niven’s bishop role in The Bishops Wife. Rev Colin Cuttel writes in the cathedral magazine that an Anglican bishop would not wear a wispy military moustache or live in Hollywood opulence.
The Economic Cooperation Administration says new Marshall Plan grants to France Italy Denmark Norway Sweden Belgium Ireland The Netherlands and Turkey will be paused unless they sign repayable loan agreements. Britain and Iceland already have loan pacts. Britain up to 310 million dollars and Iceland a 2.3 million fisheries credit.
Ottawa reports a critical steel shortage prompting Canada to search for scrap globally. Negotiations span Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Japan, South America and Germany as industry faces cuts in autos, refrigerators and furnaces. A Montreal electrical refining method offers faint hope.
Israel rejects a UN mediated order to withdraw from newly won Negev positions in southern Palestine. Foreign Minister Shertok says negotiations are possible but no withdrawal without talks, citing a Security Council sentence that withdrawal was a possible basis for negotiation, not an absolute injunction.
A Pennsylvania train collided with a truckload of steel five miles west of Uhrichville on October 27 killing the engineer and fireman and injuring 12 people, 11 passengers. Five injured taken to Dennison Hospital. eight cars derailed and the locomotive demolished.
A U S war crimes tribunal acquitted 13 top Nazi leaders while convicting Field Marshal Wilhelm von Leeb on minor counts and ordering the release of others. Hugo Sperrle was acquitted on four charges amid insufficient evidence linking him to slave labor and POW use. The panel ruled senior officers below policy level cannot be charged as war planners, dismissing the conspiracy count.
Most Rev. A. M. Roy bishop of Edmundston New Brunswick died today. He was consecrated as bishop of Edmundston in 1945. The news comes as other regional items report gas rate requests, steel shortages, and local trials.
