In Philadelphia the 14 day hunger strike by 13 Eastern Penitentiary inmates ended after roast beef aromas drew them to seek food. Prison doctors allowed only milk and a raw egg while they regain strength. Acting Warden Burke said the strike stemmed from privileges. Eleven of the strikers had previously fled by tunneling under the walls.
Philip Clarke reports from Caracas that a revolutionary junta seized power after a weekend of armed clashes. Romulo Betancourt, 37, named president and interior minister, pledges free universal suffrage by secret ballot and urges unity in the hemisphere. The cabinet leans Democratic Action, with opposition collapsing in Tachira Merida and Trujillo and Zulia oil regions ceasing resistance. Continued on Page Three.
General Walter Bedell Smith, Eisenhower’s chief intelligence and planning aide, told the Royal United Services Institute in London that Britain supplies the best high level planners and intelligence officers. Parents kept children indoors and many locked doors after dark as investigators, believing the killer to be a sex maniac, searched for the suspect who may hide in the city or nearby wooded areas. The community, long proud of low crime, faces shock and horror over the death on the way to a school dance.
Prime Minister Mackenzie King dined with Prime Minister and Mrs. Attlee at 10 Downing Street in London on Sunday night. The gathering described as a quiet dinner occurred during King’s visit.

EDMONTON Oct 22 Agriculture Minister B Bruce MacMillan said construction of a dam in the Lethbridge Southeastern irrigation district will be started by the federal government near spring. The 180 foot dam will take one and a half to two years to build and will open land for veterans settlement. The district lies northeast of Cardston near the provincial and international borders. Cost not announced.
Twenty-two missing British army and navy repatriates arrived in Vancouver Sunday night and boarded trains for the return leg. They had been in Victoria after supposed arrival with 850 repatriated Japanese prisoners of war. John Dunsmore, a Scottish sailor aboard the Prince of Wales, dismissed reports of marriages as tripe and blamed the Victoria delay on civil liberty.
Tom Powell, head of Britain's dock strikers, warned the government of a general strike as the widespread walkout expands to additional piers. Troop involvement rose to 10,000 to unload vital food, with 41,000 strikers across three London piers and 35 ships waiting in rationed Britain. Talks with Parliament were planned as unions seek a 40 hour week and wages of 5.50 dollars daily.

Ottawa reports the new Citizenship act to grant immediate status to native-born Canadians naturalized aliens and British subjects in Canada upon proclamation. State Secretary Martin said the measure aims to align Canada with its world standing and takes effect instantly after enactment.
