General Plutarco Elias Calles former Mexican president and famed Iron Man of Mexico died Friday at the British American hospital. He led the country from 1924 to 1928, spent a brief exile, and returned in 1929 to command influence until 1935, remaining a dominant power in Mexican politics.

NEW DELHI October 20 The historic Ledo road cut through jungles and mountains in 14 months to open a supply line to blockaded China will be abandoned. A pipeline from Calcutta to Kunming and a Calcutta Kunming telephone line will also be abandoned. The route was strategically vital in war as the sole land supply route besides the aerial “hump.”
Tokyo reports the first of 2900 Japanese war crime charges including atrocities will go to public trials within 60 days. Notable detainees include Hideki Tojo and Gen Masaharu Homma. Trials to be held in large public venues with wide attendance sought. Meanwhile Japan's government considers dissolving Zaibatsu monopolies after next year's elections with cabinet reshuffles likely.
Nazi leaders awaiting war crimes trial were up at dawn studying their indictments. Guards noted the line of college students cramming for exams as Goering appeared detached. Dr Robert Ley questioned law after actions, while others debated the charges.
Regina Ontario Resources Minister J L Phelps said Estevan Sask coal supplies are available at no extra cost to the Saskatchewan Power Commission until Alberta miners strike delays end and Drumheller mines resume contracts. An experimental run at the Saskatoon plant using Estevan lignite proved satisfactory.

Victoria, Oct 20. Finance Minister and acting prime minister Hor J. L. Asley told an audience that Canada’s Ninth Victory Loan must be a complete success to finance war outlays and sustain stability and peace. He called it Canada’s Greatest Victory Loan, essential to show the world Canada bears responsibility for postwar peace and prosperity. He warned inflation risk from excess spending and urged postponement of purchases to stabilize incomes as exports continue to aid a peacetime transition.
Buenos Aires saw a quiet return to normal after a 24 hour nationwide strike by Col. Juan Peron supporters. Anti-Peron radicals feared attacks and asked for police guards near the U S embassy while pro-Peron crowds filled the streets and shops reopened. Troops at Campo de Mayo reportedly rebelled as young officers resisted disarmament by Gen Urdan Hilleta. Air base Palo mar stood ready to bomb Campo de Mayo if needed. Government sent troops to strategic points to prevent further unrest.
A Calgary coroner's jury heard Lem Yum Ing a 62 year old Chinese shop owner was beaten in his green grocery on September 24 suffering 20 scalp wounds 18 skull fractures a fractured cheekbone and four broken ribs as police searched for the unidentified assailant.
Chicago October 20 The AFL Elevator Operators and Starters Union led a strike at the Palmer House leaving 3878 guests without service. Hotel lawyers say wage dispute sparked the walkout as misc employees refused to cross picket lines. Executives quickly staffed four elevators to restore limited service.
Vancouver, Oct. 20. William Hainen, 29, a former soldier, was executed at CaKalla Prison Farm for the murder of Olga Hawryluk, 23, whose battered body was found in the surf at English Bay last May. Hainen, listed as a model prisoner, faced death calmly, sleeping until the 6 a.m. MST hanging. He wore a red rose in his lapel, a plaid tie, and a brown sport coat.
Former State Secretary Stettinius will have gallstone surgery in New York next week, announced by R. J. Lyfich, his special assistant and U.N. preparatory commission delegate.
Edmonton reports United Packinghouse Workers vote 547 to 14 in favor of a strike at Canada Packers plant with six ballots spoiled. Workers seek 36 percent raise and a 40 hour five day week. A Swift Canadian plant vote planned for next Monday amid rising tension in Montreal area.
Ottawa Oct 20 A National War Finance committee spokesman said a Ninth Victory Loan display card titled A Swell Combination was withdrawn from public circulation after complaints about small lettering on the illustration that appeared to make an irre sponsible reference to government. The spokesman said the incident is not to delay opening of the campaign and efforts will trace how the lettering appeared.
Prime Minister Attlee announced in Musselburgh that Britain's Labour party aims to build a new society of peace, freedom and social justice through a long-term program of peacetime reforms. He urged discipline to keep to a timetable and warned against short term demands that could derail progress.
London reports Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Tedder will become head of the Royal Air Force on January 1. He succeeds Lord Portal of Hungerford who will retire. Tedder has served as deputy allied supreme commander under Gen. Eisenhower and commanded allied air forces in the Mediterranean. Both men began flying as fighter pilots in the First World War.
In Batavia Soekarno urged President Truman to ban American arms for Dutch forces as Indonesian independence faces pressure. Reports from Aneta say extremists killed more than 106 Japanese at Buta prison and 26 unarmed Japanese before Pavillion hotel. In New York the U S offered to help settlements in Indo China and the Dutch East Indies and outlined policy toward Russia and China.
