German captives in Canadian prisoner of war camps reportedly eat better and stay healthier than many Germans at home. They receive rations equal to Canadian troops and prepare their own meals when allowed. Winnipeg Oct 16 Incomplete returns show 26 provincial candidates lost their $200 deposits after yesterday's general election. The list includes 11 CCF nine Labor Progressive one Independent one opposition Social Credit and one Socialist candidate. Only two coalition supporters lost deposits both Independent candidates. CCF loser G W Leonard fell to Premier Stuart S Garson in Fairford.
S J Farmer Manitoba CCF leader said the party was a little disappointed by Monday election results in outside constituencies but pleased to have increased house membership from three to about 10. He noted the popular vote in Manitoba seemed to have risen despite Premier Garson's coalition winning by a sweeping majority.
Wrecking crews two miles west of Kashabowie Ontario recovered the body of T. M. Graham, 48, of Port Arthur, a Canadian National Railway engineer reported missing after a collision between two freight trains early Saturday. The body was found Monday amid debris from 18 smashed freight cars.
Cmdr P E Yonge of HMS Implacable said four deck watches were stolen from the chronometer room during a 10 minute absence of the seaman in charge. The watches, essential for Devens purposes, were taken from the 31 000 ton Royal Navy aircraft carrier during an open house in Vancouver on October 16 193? The loss may delay sailing as the crew insists they cannot sail without them.
The House of Commons voted 258 to 139 to extend wartime controls for five years, rejecting a Conservative amendment for a two year limit. The broad powers cover prices, labor, housing, factory directives, and even reassigning workers, with Eden opposing and Churchill criticizing such powers as unprecedented in peace.
Winnipeg reports Premier Stuart S. Garson called Manitoba backers’ vote a resounding victory for citizens good sense. He credited the coalition’s strong postwar achievements and said the government faces tough postwar tasks with strong public support as a guide.
Montreal Oct 16 Hon. Pierre B. Mignault aged 91, retired judge of the Supreme Court of Canada, died in hospital after a week of illness. He had remained in practice in Montreal until his hospital admission.
Labor Minister Mitchell announced J. G. Taggart will lead federal control of Canadian packing plants, with deputies to assist. Dowling of the United Packinghouse Workers of America said strike votes will be held at Swift Canada and Canada Packers plants within a week, following a unanimous vote at Moncton. The move comes as other sectors face potential disputes, including Western coal miners amid pay and holiday demands.
Canada established a peacetime armed force of about 20 000 to 25 000 active personnel with a reserve of six divisions behind them. Manitoba election results show The Pas as the sole close race with 28 polls counted. Berry Richards, Independent C.C., leads Robert Milton, Coalition Liberal Progressive, by 21 votes 2426 to 2405, with 14 polls remaining and a possible recount if the margin stays tight.
New York Oct 16. Sir Gerald Campbell British Minister in Washington and special assistant to the British Ambassador to the United States will retire at the end of October at age 66. Campbell served as United Kingdom high commissioner in Canada from 1938 to 1941.
INNIPEG Oct. 16. Premier Garsons coalition government won a second Manitoba term in yesterday's general election. Coalition led in seven seats, CCF in five, with 54 percent of the popular vote. Garson won Fairford easily, while Farmer led Winnipeg in the 10-seat riding.
NO CHANGE WINNIPEG Oct 16 The general election first counts show Premier Stuart Garson's coalition government retaining a landslide victory. Opposition leaders Lewis Stubbs and W A Kardash are noted with Stubbs seemingly re-elected and Kardash seventh in Winnipeg ballots, while Errick Willis is re-elected by acclamation with other government supporters. Manitoba voters appear to back the government amid ongoing tallies.
Election totals listed by riding show Liberal and CCF candidates leading in many districts with nonfinal tallies. Notable figures include Hensford 5998 in St Boniface, Best 2696 in Assinibola, and Campbell 1811 in Rock Wood. Continued results appear on page three.
