Moscow dispatches report the Red Army maintains stubborn resistance west of Moscow despite deterioration of defenses. The official communique says defenders fight along the entire front with intensified action in the west as German forces commit fresh units in battle. War correspondents describe the Red Army as alive and struggling, unable to be broken despite German offensives.
Ottawa reports the immigration branch upheld a deportation order against Harland Reid Raukinson, president of the United Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers' Union, for entering Canada without permission after being refused entry at Paterson, B C on September 22, 1940.
The Dorchester locomotive and two New York passenger coaches powered Canada’s first railway voyage, a 16 mile run from La Prairie to St John’s on July 21 1836. A bronze tablet at St John’s station marks the historic event, praised by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board. Earlier plans since 1824 aimed to link Lake Champlain with the St Lawrence to speed travel between Montreal and New York.
In Vichy a public trial is ordered for Leon Blum Edouard Daladier Marie-Gustave Gamelin Georges Mandel Paul Reynaud and Pierre Jacomet with Daladier Blum and Gamelin moved to Fort de Portalet for the proceedings. Wheat prices on the Winnipeg grain exchange slid as Chicago wheat and rye futures fell sharply by 10 cents due to war news and political events. Rye led the decline, while wheat held relatively firm with modest losses. Barley fell about 2 cents. gains appeared in Buenos Aires on the U S trade agreement news.
Washington October 16. President Roosevelt convened a meeting of military advisers at the White House replacing a regular cabinet session. The invited officers included War Secretary Stimson, Navy Secretary Knox, Gen. George C. Marshall, Admiral Harold R. Stark, and Harry Hopkins. The topics were not disclosed but likely covered Far East events and lend lease operations.
A Royal Air Force sergeant pilot was killed when a training machine crashed at Regina airport today. The pilot’s name was not released pending notification of next of kin. The sole occupant was being ferried with others from Winnipeg to Calgary.
