District 18 United Mine Workers reported the coal mine strike in its third week with mines idle and unresolved. In the West votes from Blairmore and Bellevue showed a decisive stay out by about a thousand miners, though exact figures were not released.
Ottawa reports Labor Minister Mitchell says indications point to about 9,000 striking western Canadian coal miners likely to return to work on Monday. In Crow's Nest Pass anger over WPTB head Donald Gordon cited, while Lethbridge and Coleman vote on back-to-work decisions. Drumheller miners vote to continue strike after Thursday meetings.

Gen Anton Dostler the first German general tried in western Europe as a war criminal was found guilty by a US military tribunal in Rome and sentenced to death for ordering the execution of 15 US soldiers captured behind German lines in Italy. The sentence awaits Allied review before execution at Aversa camp if upheld.
In Madison Florida a young black man named Jesse James Payne, held on an assault with intent to rape a five year old girl, was taken from the county jail late Wednesday or early Thursday and shot dead. Sheriff Lonnie Davis said Payne pleaded innocent and his trial was set for Tuesday. Governor Caldwell ordered an immediate investigation as details remained sketchy. Payne, wounded in a July 4 posse chase at Monticello, was reportedly killed as the county jail was not guarded.

Interviews reveal thoughts of families, homes, and country, despite staying loyal to Germany with a mess hall sign claiming heart with Germany. In Commons, Agriculture Minister Gardiner defended Canada joining the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization after Solon Low pressed for domestic improvements and global cooperation. Sydney faces electricity rationing on Monday after a strike by 600 workers at Bunnerong power station. Unofficial figures estimate 50,000 metal workers and thousands more in offices may halt work. Other strikes include 4,000 coal miners and 13,000 in steel, power, printing, and meat sectors.
