In Findlay Ohio a fugitive gunman Leonard Johnson 29 of Detroit seized Rev John Knox hostage in Trinity Episcopal Church and was shot by Patrolman R C Vanderveen after a struggle. Johnson warned police not to capture him as authorities closed in. The rector suffered injuries during the incident.
Ottawa reports that Ratold Samuel Gerson of Montreal, 42, a former key man in the situsitions and supply department, was found guilty by the Ontario Supreme Court jury in his second trial on a conspiracy to supply confidential information to Russia. He received four years in prison. The verdict followed a three thousand four hundred twenty minute deliberation. Gerson remained calm as the verdict was read. Crown asked for credit for six months already served. defense cited good character. The judge noted both counsel remarks and Gerson’s continued denial of guilt. This is Gerson’s second trial after a prior five year sentence was quashed on appeal due to an indictment alteration.
Toronto officials on October 1 said there is no distillery holiday in Canada and no plan to curb grain for export. They reacted to President Truman's request for U S distillers to refrain from shipping grain for 66 days to boost grain supplies for Europe.
A four story Chicago tenement fire on the rear northwest side killed ten people including six children and four women and injured more than a dozen others. Officials say the blaze appeared incendiary with kerosene odor detected and victims included predominantly African Americans. fourteen hospitalized.
