Settlement of the Newfoundland railroad strike involving 2500 government road workers was announced. Workers accepted a wage offer of 30 cents an hour for one class and $20 per month for others. The 32 day stoppage disrupted crops, mail, imports, travel, and fuel in the island, with rates varying by class and location.
The Greek coalition led by Themistokles Sophoulis handed in its resignation to King Paul, who accepted it. Sophoulis will have foreign minister Constantin Tsaldaris called to discuss forming a new government after Sept. 7, 1947 Liberal- Populist rule. Tsaldaris remains at the Paris UN session.
Premier Garson will resign on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Agriculture Minister Douglas Campbell will be sworn in as Manitoba's new premier. Garson plans to move to federal politics and is expected to become justice minister. Campbell leads a Lib Liberal Progressive coalition holding 42 seats in the legislature.
A Ottawa Journal correspondent notes a looming fish famine as demand outpaces supply. He cites heavy fishing, White Sea closures, refits, depth charge damage, and vast air scouting over the North Sea as factors driving fish to other waters.
Veterans from two world wars gather in Toronto Ottawa Montreal and other cities to honor the fallen. In West Bay, 80 miles from Sydney, Nova Scotia, Ernest John Vebantie a 52 year old crippled father and three children Neil 11 Joe 10 and Betty 6 died in a fatal blaze. A daughter Kay 14 escaped by leaping from a second story window. The remaining family member was away at a neighbor’s home. Mrs Lebantie had died a year earlier.
Fifteen former guards at the Mauthausen camp were hanged for killing more than 4,600 wartime prisoners including 47 British and American airmen. Thirteen were SS Storm Troops. The hangings raise Landsberg executions to 58 in a month with 61 of 139 convicted still awaiting fate.
An Allied court sentenced Hideki Tojo and six top aides to death, 16 others to life or long terms, after a swift 21 minute reading. Some defendants showed emotion while others remained stoic as reviews and deadlines were set for petitions.

About 1,100 tons of hay baled for shipment to British Columbia were burned in a blaze at Standoff. The 250 tons burned totaled 150 on the baler and 100 on storage, valued around $8,000 and insured. In Winnipeg on November 12 the weather and harvest conditions are described as favorable for Western Canada's 225,000 wheat farmers. Reported marketings show a strong year with 201,400,000 bushels delivered to the Canadian Wheat Board by Nov 4, up from 165,000,000 last year. Projections for the year hint at 300,000,000 bushels after adjustments, while carrier speed to ports remains a concern and the Wheat Board urges elevator companies to accelerate shipments.
