U S government plans to ask farmers to plant nearly 6.5 percent more land to livestock feed grains next year to replenish supplies cut by this year's poor corn crop. Projections show corn output near 2.46 billion bushels with a 1948 planting goal of about 2 million acres. total feed grain acres set at 136 million, about 9.3 million more than this year. Wheat goal around 75 million acres, up from 1947 and near harvest levels. measures intended to safeguard overseas shipments and home stocks amid crop-rotation concerns. Eight-cent chocolate bars return as Vancouver dealers note a one-cent price rise to eight cents.
The Canadian Armistice Day observance on Parliament Hill Ottawa drew 8000 wreaths and a two minute silence led by Field Marshal Alexander and acting Prime Minister St Laurent. He proposes expropriation of BC Electric and BC Power assets and an interim labor agreement to restore service, while ministers seek mediation and public pressure builds.
The Canadian Press reports Chancellor Hugh Dalton of the Exchequer announcing a mixed budget. Profits tax doubles from Jan 1, no change to income tax, subsidies trimmed next year, and new taxes on gambling and luxury purchases. In Philadelphia on November 12 a large black crow visited James M. Large's yard. After a companion felled it and a setter approached, the bird bit Large and the others, evading capture despite being wounded. The crow fought back and could not be killed, leaving observers impressed by its spirit.
Toronto police continue a west end manhunt along Dundas and Dufferin for the slayer of taxi driver Ralph Marceso, shot for $15 in fare money.
