Saint John New Brunswick November 1 Two Royal Canadian Air Force airmen were killed when their plane crashed near the airport runway. The flight was described as routine and few details were released. Names were held pending notification of kin. Squadron Leader G Vadboncoeur issued the brief statement.
Four Kirkland Lake municipal councilors met Labor Minister McLarty to press views on a potential strike affecting over 4 090 miners across eight gold mines in the Kirkland Lake field. Edmonton court reserves judgment in tobacco cases.

Colonial Secretary Rene Platon returned to Vichy after a hurried trip to Jibuti and said France would destroy railway and harbor works at the Somaliland port before surrender to British forces. He did not specify the surrender date.
London Nov 1 Prime Minister Churchill told the house of commons he would not hesitate to bomb Rome if war needs made it convenient. Sir Archibald Southby pressed for a clearer answer and said he would raise the issue again in view of the unsatisfactory reply.
An eight year old boy Jackie Nesbitt and his six year old brother How ard took four dollars from their mother Edna Mae Nesbitt as a prank. Jackie was chasing by a car after running into an intersection and was killed.
Toronto November 11 The draft Meighen movement nears its climax as three Conservative stalwarts plan to deliver the conference’s unanimous request for Arthur Meighen to assume the party leadership in the Commons. Meighen will not decide today, with a hotel meeting continuing the talks. Hon. Earl Rowe also attended the Ottawa conference gathering.
The Admiralty announced three Italian destroyers were sunk and two damaged in a Sunday battle against an Italian convoy in the Mediterranean. British forces under Capt. W. G. Argrey reported sinking two more destroyers and damaging one, with a submarine intercepting a remnant of the Italian escort. The Italians admitted seven merchant ships and two destroyers sunk and another destroyed, while claiming two British vessels were torpedoed.
Senator Robert Taft said Roosevelt declined a rapprochement proposal because Japan would not guarantee Vladivostok from attack. Taft refused to name sources but called the account reliable. He cited Japan offering to quit China with five garrisoned cities and warned Churchill pushing the U S toward war.
In New Delhi Gen Sir Archibald Wavell, then allied with Auchinleck, told a state council he miscalculated the timing of the German counter attack in Cyrenaica. He said Greek requests shifted Middle East troops to Greece, leaving pilots and equipment short for defense. The attack came earlier than his April target.
Singapore authorities say Britain's great naval base is ready to receive a powerful fleet for duty in the Orient if war breaks out between the United States and Japan. Churchill warned Britain would act quickly in hostilities and Singapore’s defenses would help deter Tokyo while also allowing a strong British role as ally in any Pacific conflict.
London reports after three nights of stabbing raids over Germany the RAF curtailed operations due to bad weather across the continent. A lone German raider dropped bombs near the Scottish border and two Nazi bombers were shot down off the northeast coast. British bombers patrolled the Norwegian coast and struck a large merchant vessel with two hits.
Londoners paid two minutes of silence at the Whitehall cenotaph marking Armistice Day in a subdued, postwar mood. Westminster Abbey held a brief service for the Unknown Soldier while crowds laid thousands of poppies and wreaths, including offerings from royalty, Churchill, Massey, and allied envoys. Reports from London on Nov 11 say Soviet troops mounted major counter attacks near Serpukhov and Tula as German forces faced encirclement near Volokol and in the Oka region. Fighting rages in the Crimean ports Sevastopol and Kerch while Leningrad and Karelia withstand fresh German assaults.
Berlin dispatches report German and Romanian troops pushing on Sevastopol and Kerch in the Crimea with aims to cut Arctic sea routes for Allied supply lines from Britain and the United States. Front lines extend through Karelia and east of Leningrad as the high command asserts growing pressure on the Black Sea area.
Ottawa leaders and citizens gathered at the national memorial for the First Great War dead. Mrs Catherine Lewis, 87, laid a wreath for her two sons and other bereaved Canadian mothers. Col Willis O'Connor placed a wreath in the absence of the governor general and Prime Minister Mackenzie King.
British submarines in the Mediterranean sank six Axis troop or supply ships and two sailing vessels, and damaged two armed merchant cruisers and two more supply ships. This adds to prior losses as British warships sank a convoy of 10 ships and three destroyers south of Laranto.
