Chief Judge J W McDonald Dies At 71 In Calgary
Chief Judge J W McDonald of the southern Alberta district court died in a Calgary hospital after an operation at age 71. A former Liberal leader and Macleod mayor, he was sworn in as the first incumbent chief judge in 1944. Born near Toronto May 3 1879, he studied at the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall, practiced in Macleod, and served as crown prosecutor. He was mayor during Macleod Jubilee 1924 and held various public roles including Calgary police commissioner and royal commission member on child welfare. He leaves a son J A McDonald of Calgary and a daughter Mrs John Fawcett of Victoria. Funeral arrangements are not announced.
