Finance Minister Abbott announced continued U S dollar rationing for pleasure travel to the United States, keeping a $150 allowance per person and $100 for children under 11. The policy remains until Nov 15 1949 with careful review and no change in business health or educational travel rules.
Pro Communist union members in Paris vote three to one for a country wide 24 hour rail strike. First returns show 6,403 in favor and 2,016 opposed with a final tally due tomorrow. No date is set for the strike.
The Victorian government allows slaughter of 2000 seals in the year ending June 6, 1949 with 75 slain on Lady Julia Percy Island near Portland. Seals to be smoked or cured for human consumption while remaining carcasses go to stock feed. Officials cite seals as fish eaters impacting local catches.
Mrs Jean McAllister a goldenhaired Scottish war bride is on trial for her life in Lindsay Ontario charged with the pistol murder of her husband John McAllister a navy veteran. War brides in the district rally to her support as her mother Mrs Emily McInerney flies from Scotland to be with her daughter. Authorities say the accused was found barefoot and hysterical near her home after the Sept 5 shooting.
Winnipeg trucker Clarence George Richardson, 33, was hanged at Headingley jail at 1:18 a.m. for the hammer murder of Mrs. Ann Varty, 25, on January 2. The minister led the Lord's Prayer as the hooded prisoner met his fate and spoke of his son in a final message to his family.

New York November 5 stock prices slid one dollar to more than sixty two a share as a savage selling wave hit the market. The New York Stock Exchange floor was a churn of selling orders from across the United States and high speed tape lagged up to four minutes. Analysts said the drop reflected unease over administration plans on taxes labor controls and housing with selling led by average investors rather than professionals.
Seth Linton a 41 year old well digger was sentenced to be hanged February 3 for the murder of Lew Stewart. The jury deliberated three hours and five minutes before returning a guilty verdict.
