Labour suffers a regional setback after Saturday's municipal elections with a net loss of 652 seats while the Conservatives gain 621. Revised returns from 3683 English and Welsh boroughs show the party still holds a powerful Commons majority, though a general election is unlikely.
In Moscow, Brazilian Ambassador Mario Pinheiro Brandao, his son, and embassy staff flew to Stockholm then Rio de Janeiro after Brazil severed relations with the Soviet Union. The break followed a Soviet rejection of a protest over articles deemed insulting to President Dutra and other officials.
Pravda reports a Moscow factory workers letter accusing Maj. Gen. R. Hilton, British military attaché, of taking photos inside the plant. WINNIPEG Nov 3. The Canadian Wheat Board announced it is prepared to authorize limited quantities of flour for export to Newfoundland. Shipments will depart from the mill by December 3. The board will cap the sale quantity and will not allow subsequent changes to destination or shipment time.
Stanislaw Mikolajczyk said he fled Poland through the Soviet zone to Germany and into Britain after learning a Moscow backed Polish government planned to sentence him and two other Peasant Party officials to death. He arrived in Britain in an RAF plane and spoke from his wife’s home in London. He declined to detail future plans or possible asylum.
Mikolajczyk, outspoken critic of Russian influence in Poland, who disappeared days ago from Warsaw, has arrived in Britain. He had come under fire within his Polish Party before seeking refuge abroad.
