London papers favor Dewey in the presidential race. Governor Thomas E. Dewey travels with his family and votes in Manhattan while awaiting results. He remains confident despite Democratic dissension and shifts in southern support.
A West Coast classic reprint outlines six rules for heart health. Seek weight reduction slowly via diet and graded exercise, limit intense activity, avoid post meal exertion, schedule mental tasks for when fresh, curb emotional reactions, and stay cheerful. The note warns anger raises blood pressure and urges calm reactions.
MINNEDOSA Manitoba a two way race to decide the Manitoba legislature seat drew fire at the coalition by election. H S Rungay the coalition candidate faces Ralph Frith the C C P standard bearer. The resignation of Dr E J Rutledge left the riding to vote with opposition lines. Premier Stuart Garson accused the C G F of betraying a 1942 coalition mandate and defended the provinces progress under the government.
British Columbia Attorney General Gordon Wismer told the Transport Board in Vancouver that discriminatory mountain freight rates are fostering secessionist sentiment. He urged removal of the mountain differential, arguing it delays growth and burdens the province, while Byron Johnson warned the differential violates Federation principles and imperial-era railway intents. The province seeks official removal, with hearings before Justice Archibald and submissions from boards of trade and industry.
Paris November 1 Delegates at the United Nations paused for holidays as the body waited for the US election result. John Foster Dulles and Governor Dewey sped to Scandinavia for talks with Denmark Norway and Sweden on possible adherence to a North Atlantic security pact expanding ties among Britain France Belgium The Netherlands Luxembourg Canada and the United States. Sweden has been reluctant to commit amid the east west struggle.
TEL AVIV reports Israeli troops have gained full control of northern Palestine and claim a smashing two day offensive cleared Arab forces from the Galilee, driving remnants of the Liberation Army toward Lebanon. UN observers deny Lebanese territory entry. An Israeli spokesman says all fronts are quiet but UN cease fire is extended to 2 am CST. In Amman King Abdullah vows to seek peace among Arabs and Palestine delegations seek aid to end Arab disunity.
Vienna report says United States official Irving Ross, assistant to Weatmore Wilcox, was beaten to death in the Soviet zone. A 18 year old Austrian girl, Anna Sutkena, says four Russian soldiers attacked them near Ross car in the early hours. Ross suffered a skull fracture and died in hospital.
Newfoundland remained in the stalemate of an island-wide railway strike as the government, operator of the railway, declined revised union demands tabled Saturday after a weekend flurry of settlement proposals. The stalled talks prolong disruption across the island.
NANKING November first. Chinese government planes bombed Mukden shortly after Communist forces completed occupation. Explosions occurred near the United States consulate. Casualties unknown. Chiang Kai-shek urged continued resistance while warning of the northwest reverses. United States and British authorities prepared evacuations as Communists advance toward Manchuria.
In Donora Pennsylvania an all night rain failed to clear a deadly fog smog over the valley. The death toll rose to 19 with a revised count and hundreds of illness cases as chemists studied air samples for toxic components. Doctors treated 400 plus patients and hospitals were crowded. Local officials blamed zinc plant fumes while Belgian observers recalled the 1930 Meuse valley tragedy.
London Ontario November report says George Henry Dent a 74 year old former soldier and tailor threw himself before a car to shield two six year olds Paul Wistow and Sandra Elgie as they crossed Dundas Street near Oakland Avenue on Halloween night. Dent died four hours later after sustaining injuries. The car driver Lavergne Baskey 22 faces dangerous driving charges. Dent had told Hale Street Soldiers Home officials he would help guide children at a busy corner. Witnesses say he dove in front of the children as the car approached.
A twin engined United States Air Force transport plane crashed near Muldrow Oklahoma killing at least twelve persons. Eyewitnesses reported the aircraft exploded in the air after engines cut out and others saw the fuselage disintegrate at low altitude. Bodies scattered over a wide area. home base and destination not known.
Chief Justice Rinfret of the Canadian Supreme Court urged abolishing appeals to the Privy Council. Speaking to the Quebec Bar Association in Hull he argued Canada is ready for a final appeal court in the Supreme Court and criticized the Privy Council for misapprehending Canadian legal administration. He encouraged French speaking lawyers to appear before the Supreme Court and said English speaking judges will give due attention.
New York reports eleven candidates seeking the U S presidency. Among them are President Truman Democrat Governor Dewey Republican Henry Wallace Progressive J Strom Thurmond States Rights Norman Thomas Socialist Edward Teichert Socialist Labor Claude Watson Prohibition Joan Gott Greenback Gerald Smith Christian Nationalist Farrell Dobbs Socialist Workers Joan Maxwell Vegetarian. Some names do not appear on state ballots due to election requirements.
A weekend of tragedies in Southern Alberta claimed two more lives with a street death, a suicide, and a highway collision. Victims named include John Edward Wolser, 76, of 416 Eighth Street South, Robert Laidlaw, 64, Pincher Creek hospital patient, and Matthew Miller, 50, CPR foreman. The crashes occurred near Pincher Station and High River, with extensive injuries to Peter Sorkismo, and an explosion involving Laidlaw and Alex Wihnan. Laidlaw’s death follows a gasoline fire after a cow-struck collision. Miller died in Medicine Hat CP yard, the inquest opened today. The report notes Scottish-born Laidlaw, Alberta Wheat Pool agent, married to Elizabeth Branch Dunwell, survived by wife and others.
