Allies pound Essen Jena air hubs in Sardinia and Pantelleria raid

Allied air forces bombed Villacidro and Decimomannu in Sardinia and Pantelleria, destroying planes on the ground and wounding airfields. One Allied pilot survived a 18 minute dogfight after 4,000 fragmentation bombs fell on Decimomannu. Italian communique noted damage to Sardinia and Pantelleria while Sicily was hit.

Bombs Hit Main Kiska Camp in Japanese Held Island Action

Washington May 28. The navy department announced US air forces bombed the main camp on Kiska Island May 25. Bomb fragments targeted gun emplacements and surrounding areas as Allied forces pressed the campaign. Also Washington May 28. US troops attacked the third main Japanese position on Attu Island near Lake Cortes and indications suggested the enemy force on Attu was breakdown into small pockets of resistance.

Potatoes Shortage Measures Discussed by Parliament

Ottawa May 28 Douglas Abbott parliamentary assistant to Finance Minister Isley said the prices board is requisitioning carloads of potatoes to areas of greatest need in British Columbia and beyond. He outlined seed potato labeling rules and noted exports of certified seed potatoes were restricted. Day In Parliament Digest for June Debates

Bombers Hit Ichang in China and Other War Updates

May 28 report from the Chinese central news agency says Chinese bombers escorted by fighters attacked Ichang on the Yangtse river, inflicting damage on military installations while attackers returned safely. A six alarm fire swept Oakland's Gihad warehouse district, threatening Moore Drydock yards and Liberty ship construction. A German quake near Stuttgart damaged chimneys and injured several. In Ontario, a crash-triggered fire destroyed a general hire and post office, with three dead and a village threatened. Canadian officers joined Attu observers with U S forces to study Japanese tactics and battlefield methods.
