Carmedita Hartung, three year old daughter of Mr and Mrs George Hartung of Champion, died in Vulcan hospital early Friday from pneumonia. She would have turned four in July. Survived by one brother. Funeral services in Calgary at Jacques funeral parlors Monday with interment in a Calgary cemetery.

Ot tawa May 27 Rt Hon J L Msley former justice minister today was appointed a judge of the supreme court of his native province of Nova Scotia Announcement of Mr Osley's appointment was made by Justice Minister Garson He replaces Justice R H Graham who retires from the bench Mr Isley a 55 year old lawyer who returned to private practice in Montreal last summer following a 22 year political career that took him through three cabinet appointments He now is counsel for the royal commission on transportation A staunch Liberal he was appointed revenue minister by former prime Minister Mackenzie King in 1935 and in 1946 following the outbreak of war was moved to the finance portfolio until 1946 when he became minister of justice
Viscount Leverhulme aged 61 died in a Minneapolis hospital after a train trip from Banff. His wife Lady Leverhulme and daughter Jr. Lee Morris were present along with Charles Luckman of Lever Brothers United States. Bleeding from an internal ulcer proved fatal despite transfusions and medical care. The family was on a world tour. Leverhulme's Unilever empire runs 516 firms in 40 countries.
Seventeen people died when flaming lava engulfed a group of engineering students and three professors during a volcano ascent in Cali Colombia. The tragedy was reported with confirmed fatalities and the exploration group was on a field trip when disaster struck.

Britain refused to extradite Gerhart Eisler to the United States to serve two prison sentences from a communist investigations case. Bow Street magistrate Sir Laurence Dunne ruled the US failed to prove Eisler was convicted of an extraditable offense. Eisler expressed relief and said he would go to Germany, where a University of Leipzig professorship awaits him in the Soviet zone.
Hubert L. Ripley, the cartoonist behind Believe It or Not, died in New York at 5 p.m. EDT at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 55.
