London Jas 27. Lore Louis Mountbatten, commander of the destroyer Kelly, was lost in naval fighting off Crete. Eight officers and 120 men, most of the ship's complement, were rescued. There is no report yet on Lord Louis's fate.
In Rome reports from March 27 say Vasail Laci Muhaioff, accused of firing on an automobile carrying King Victor Emmanuel during a visit, was executed today in Gaxa prison Tirana. Italians claimed Muhailoff, described as grieved by poetic madness, aimed at Albanian premier Snefkez Verlaci. he was convicted by a military tribunal and sentenced to death by firing squad.
The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal has appointed a new national executive committee chairman for the Canadian Red Cross. A Western-born figure from Qu Appelle, he studied at Trimmiy college and Toronton universities, overcame a youth shooting injury to become a noted athlete and lawyer, won 55 prizes in five years, and served as King’s Counsel since 1927. He was key in Saskatchewan’s case before the natural resources commission in 1933-34 and holds Anglican leadership as chancellor of the diocese of Qu Appelle since 1921.
Canadian Press reports Warspite and Valiant damaged in Crete battle though extent of damage not stated. Royal Navy losses include Gloucester Fiji Juno Greyhound Kelio Kashmir in Crete clash. Allied forces report heavy enemy losses as reinforcements reach Crete garrison.
Canada announces the Victory Loan 1941 will be offered in two maturities next Monday. Ten year bonds mature June 15, 1951 with a 3 percent coupon, issued at 109 and redeemable at par 101. callable in 1950 and after, yield 3.09 percent. Thirty-two year bonds mature December 15, 1946 with a 2 percent coupon, to be sold at 92 to yield 2.19 percent, redeemable at 100 and not callable before maturity. Over-subscription expected.
Toronto officials report film star Gary Cooper has offered two victory bonds, 100 and 50 dollars, to two men who enlist in the Canadian Active Army this week. Regimental numbers of new recruits in Military District No. 2 will be drawn for the bonds during city hall ceremonies after the victory loan parade next week.
President Roosevelt asked Congress for 5.3196 billion dollars in additional airplane appropriations. Secretary Stephen Earry said the president would deliver a momentous address tonight at 7 36 p.m. over CBC stations.
Crete remains tenuous as Allied reinforcements arrive and German troops continue parachuting in. The Mediterranean fleet suffered losses including two cruisers and four destroyers in the week of heavy fighting. German gains around Maleme airport widen the foothold as Greek sources report thousands of Nazi dead and significant sea losses for British ships.
In Ottawa the House of Commons moved toward an early adjournment with a Wednesday half-day session and Friday evening sittings. Prime Minister Mackenzie King noted the plan and said no formal motion would be needed, while Conservative House Leader Hanson approved the arrangement. King also addressed tax on interest paid to non-resident holders of Canadian securities and discussed wartime updates including the sinking of the Bismarck.

Ottawa May 27 Finance Minister Ilsley rejected a Conservative suggestion to delay federal tax proposals pending provincial agreement. In London May 27 Prime Minister Churchill told the House of Commons that the German battleship Bismarck has sunk and measures are being taken regarding the cruiser Prince Eugen. Authoritative circles indicate the Prince of Wales joined the action, the Bismarck’s sister ship. The sinking was first officially announced in Parliament by Churchill.
The admiralty disclosed that Royal Canadian Air Force planes from Newfoundland joined the search for the German battleship Bismarck. The report notes continued coverage as ships and aircraft scoured the Atlantic.
London dispatch reports torpedo planes from Ark Royal and Atlantic fleet units sank the German battleship Bismarck. Alexander announced the 35,000 ton warship was finally sunk last night with Ark Royal delivering the coup de grace. He noted Crete fighting remains severe and hailed the action as a major step toward ending Hitler’s reign.
London dispatch recalls the Hood and Bismarck naval battle the admiralty issued in a communique. Air reconnaissance located two German battleships and a cruiser near Bergen and orders were issued to position naval forces in the Denmark Strait. On May 23 Rear Admiral Wake-Walker reported an enemy force heading southward as visibility deteriorated with snow, fire, and mist. Norfolk Suffolk and Shackleton shadowed the ships through the night despite poor sighting conditions.
Casualty list from Ottawa lists Ganner Kiarton Olafson 3166924 of the Royal Canadian Artillery as seriously ill. Next of kin is sister Mrs. Charles Clark of 86 Twelfth St. Lethbridge.
