Hazel Dell Saskatchewan May 23 A half a century old amputee and school teacher, losing both legs and an arm at nine, offers to leave her farm to help rehabilitate Canada’s amputee veterans. Mrs Taylor, former Kate Gulka, hopes authorities accept her offer before she leaves teaching at end of June. She says her experience could boost confidence in overseas veterans.
Ontario and Quebec face renewed rain with New Liskeard and Timmins areas worst hit. Floodwaters from Lake Timiskaming, Missinable and Mattagami rivers threaten towns, cottages, and roads as Ottawa Gatineau and surrounding regions flood. Boiled water advisory issued for New Liskeard while lake levels rise above normal.
The election committee rejected a proposal to lower the voting age from 21 to 18 by a 9 to 3 vote. Three Liberal and Progressive Conservative members supported keeping 21, while three D C members urged change. The committee also approved a provision granting military veterans voting rights before 21. The issue may return in the commons when the report is considered.
A bill to raise incomes of government and senate leaders in Ottawa will be moved in the Commons session. Current pay shows Wishart Robertson and J Nova Scovia as government leaders, John Haig and John Bracken among party leaders with salaries around $18,10 a year in total compensation.
Washington May 23 A P Farmers told world food prices remain favorable until 1950, according to Agriculture Secretary Anderson testifying to a congressional sub committee. He urged approval of the Commodity Credit Corporation to borrow up to 4 725 000 000 dollars to form a permanent agency and support prices above parity. He noted potential wheat shipments to India and South America, and discussed price comparisons with Argentina. A separate Alaska agriculture funding of 144 940 dollars was recommended as defense measure to aid research and veteran farmers upon which the territory may rely for military value.
Toronto May 23. Bluey the kangaroo arrives with Australian and Canadian airliners, greeted by Mayor Saunders and journalists. The marsupial will join Barbara Ann Scott as guest of honor at the June 7 By-line Ball. Bluey will tour cities en route to the event and stay in a hotel suite for the reception. Dr. J A Campbell of Riverdale Zoo reports Bluey in good health and eager for the trip ahead.
Army announces wreckage of the Flying Fortress missing from the Canal Zone to Kelly Field, Tex has been found in Nicaragua. The plane carrying 15 aboard was located after a vast search across Central America, the Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea. Further details were not provided.
Crooner Bing Crosby arrived in Montreal with his wife Dixie Lee for a four day fishing trip in northern Quebec. Local reporters noted the entertainer planned quiet leisure and country settings during the visit.
Premier Manning of Alberta said he will propose a fast federal conference with provinces that signed tax transfer agreements to settle social service grants. Five candidates, including Paul Hoffman, are under consideration as officials expect a quick appointment. A separate $50 million relief fund is pending the president’s signature. A U S army mission has arrived in Frankfurt en route to Athens to oversee preparations for military aid.

The debate covers taxation relief, dominion provincial powers, and the Canadian Wheat Board audit with calls to place oversight under the auditor general.
