Soil Drifting Bad in Central Alberta Areas

Stirling, provincial soils and weeds supervisor, called yesterday one of the worst days in years with winds from 25 to 55 mph. Red Deer saw visibility drop to a half mile during the windstorm. William Mulligan and family endured poverty on a homestead until an oil discovery brought wealth. They sold drilling rights for about 40 thousand dollars, bought a tractor a sedan and a hotel cottege for the children. The Mulligans also took a U S trip. The 69 year old father Musigar says the family will build a basement home replacing the dirt floor shack.

Big Bond Issue Is All Sold

Ottawa May 18 CP Finance Minister Abbott announced that the 745 million dollar record refunding loan launched Monday has been heavily oversubscribed. Proceeds will refund three per cent 1935 bonds 95 million and 650 million in First Victory Loan bonds. The 1935 bonds redeem June 1 and First Victory bonds paid June 15. Investors eager, showing confidence in the country’s future. Bank of Canada coordinated the campaign and will advise dealers on order fillings tonight.

Water Rises Six Inches Threatening Winnipeg Dike

The Red River rose six inches at a critical point near Fort Garry, threatening new suburban areas as Winnipeg faced a ongoing flood. Southeast winds at 74 mph pushed water toward the city while rainfall forecasts urged heavy storms and a half inch of rain.
