Northern Alberta forest fires drive 400 plus men and bulldozers to battle outbreaks. More than 100 settlers left homeless as fires spread near Kinuso Canyon Creek and Lesser Slave Lake. Smoke blankets the province and air travel is halted.
Prime Minister St Laurent tours Nova Scotia from Digby to Yarmouth delivering speeches on developing a larger home market for Maritime fish. George Drew campaigns in Grand Falls Newfoundland focusing on labor policy. Solon Low broadcasts on CBC urging purchase power and a shift in finances. Cabinet ministers Claxton and Winters join the push defending Liberal foreign trade and the current peak in trade.

An early morning quake rattled downtown and eastern Los Angeles waking residents. Sheriff’s office reported no damage and the tremor appeared local with San Bernardino Lancaster Indio and other southern California cities not feeling it. A separate May 2 quake had its epicenter in a desert region and also caused no damage.

By Associated Press FRED HAMPSON May reports the roar of battle at Woosung harbor and Lunghwa airfield as two Communist prongs close on Shanghai. Red Gen. Chen Yi drives to seize the city or tighten a siege. A clash sweeps southwest about 15 miles from Lunghwa, near Shanghai’s edge.
Wireless and radio links to Shanghai were disrupted as Chinese government stations on opposite sides of the city failed to acknowledge messages. Dispatches from Shanghai still arrived, while sending stations operated blind. Manila Canton and other cities also reported lack of acknowledgments to Shanghai.

London May 13 Britain’s House of Commons overwhelmingly approved the North Atlantic security treaty. The 333 to 0 motion praised the pact as deterrent to Soviet aggression and noted it would soon ratify, with Lords formality. Bevin and Churchill urged broader regional cooperation and criticized Soviet policy. Churchill called Spain's absence a serious gap and urged Madrid ambassador return.
Ottawa May 13 veteran mercy mission flyer F O R West of Canning W S has won the 1948 McKee Trans Canada Trophy Canada’s top civilian flying award for meritorious service in aviation. West with the D F C and A F C and over 2000 hours on search and rescue flew on east coast missions after the war including January 1948 evacuations to Mutton Bay and Harrington Harbor Quebec under difficult conditions.
At the United Nations social committee Polish hard line on displaced persons drew Western opposition. Poland’s Henryk Altman accused DP camps in Germany and Austria of supplying cheap labor to Marshall plan countries. Canada and Russia exchanged rebuttals as Tsarapkin read alleged letters from displaced persons in Canada.
Lethbridge and Calgary contestants earn top marks in a multi class festival giving prizes across piano, violin, soprano, duet and chorus categories. Notable winners include David Simpson and Leona Smith with scores in the 80s and 90s, and Jack Brown and Catherine Morrison taking honors in Lieder and chorus competitions.

London May 13 Armed police patrolled Downing Street as a precaution against possible terrorism amid bitter Irish opposition to the Labor governments Ireland bill. A spokesman said Attlee’s residence at No 10 was an extra safety measure though threats were denied. The bill would block a reunion of Ireland with Northern Ireland without Ulster approval, prompting strong reactions from Ireland’s new government and southern republic leaders.
